I noticed a previous comment said new versions of D&D are limiting. Although this is true to an extent, I would suggest starting with D&D 5e. This is the most recent version of D&D. It is an excellent system to get one's feet wet into Tabletop. Pathfinder is great for customization, but with that variety comes a ton of complicated rules. Be prepared to bring a calculator to the table to figure everything out (Roll20 helps with that). It takes me a solid week to create a Pathfinder character due to the literally thousands of options. By contrast I can create a 5e character in a matter of a couple hours. The biggest trick is finding a DM who is willing to work with you. 5e is not an extremely deep system, but that also means rules are often much simpler. In my opinion, it's a worthy trade. I suggest starting in 5e, and if you find yourself running out of options, try a more in depth system like PF.
