October is also quite inquisitive, poking deeper at things that appear odd to her. Those things tend to have a bit of an weirdness to them, rather than being morbid, as is the case with most Crypts. [b][color=fdc68a]Why You Were Invited to the Institute:[/color][/b] The Crypt family has always been an odd one, though usual, the oddness comes from their interests. Every now and then, a family member has truly peculiar abilities, rather than just an interest in the macabre. October was born with the ability to control and create fire. At the age of five, her ability manifested itself, and burned her house to the ground. Her parents perished in the fire, but their spirits remained in the ruins of the dwelling. The story made the papers, and from her surname, she was a shoe in for the Institute. 

[b][color=fdc68a]Life Before Attending the Institute:[/color][/b] October's mother was a Crypt, while her father was a mortician. The pair of them had only one child, and lived in a formerly abandoned home in  Portsmouth, New Hampshire. They never realized that their daughter had been born with a gift, with the flames consuming the family home when she was barely five years old, and only October making it out alive. It was at that point that the state sent her to live with her father's family, the Smiths. 

She hadn't yet learned how to control her ability, and the family scolded her, thinking that she was simply an arsonist, setting the fires intentionally. They weren't kind to October either due to her surname--they were traditional, and they still viewed her mother as a seductive liberal, tearing their son away. They eventually became convinced that the devil lived within the child and sent for a priest, attempting to exorcise her. Instead, the seven year old girl's arms went ablaze, sending the priest and her grandparents running in fear. 

From that point on, October bounced from foster home to foster home, with the state unable (or perhaps unwilling) to find a Crypt family member to take her in. Wherever she went, more fires occurred, and she became associated with a curse. No one wanted to take her in, and October ran away so often that it worked out for everyone. Eventually, the state turned a blind eye to her. She then moved from place to place, working sometimes in circus sideshows as a fire eater, and staying with various Crypt family members for never more than a few months. 

By the age of fifteen, October had learned how to control her powers, able to manipulate the fire freely and create it as she wished. She lived with her mother's brother, Silvester, at that point. He legally adopted her, which was a relief to the state, as it allowed them to ignore her in good conscience. However, her spirit has always been accustomed to traveling and moving about, so when she was invited to attend the Institute, she couldn't help but be curious.
