The only immediately obvious difference lies in his eye color, which is coppery hue rather than stony one. A similar sense of warmth can be seen in his soft-featured face and jovial expressions. Other than a disobedient swirl of hair, he doesn’t have any characteristic physical traits. As far as his choice dress goes, the most common features of Shunpei’s wardrobe are metal arm protectors and loose-sleeved shirts. Palette-wise, he prefers a light base complemented with dark, cool, and/or earthy colors. Also he stands at a height of 4’10”, which he’s proud to say is (just slightly!) above the village average.
PERSONALITY & MOTIVATIONS
If there’s anything to be said about Shunpei it’s that he’s carefree and relentlessly positive. As high empathy individual who can’t stand a pervasive atmosphere of seriousness and gloom, he always does his best to maintain a sense of levity in all things and cheer people up when they’re not feeling well. He does his best to offer advice and assistance, both asked for and not, when possible, and is never above making jokes at his own expense. But despite his extroverted demeanor, Shunpei isn't actually overly talkative or energetic when you get down to it. He runs out of social energy very quickly, and just as too much negative energy overwhelms him, too much positive does so as well. If he doesn’t have a chance to recharge, however brief, most of his stranger choices transition from “pretending to be an idiot” to “idiot, period.” He’s usually quite embarrassed afterwards if he does anything particularly odd without thinking. In fact, it’s usually quite easy to fluster the young man by bringing up elements of his “dark past”. As far as his motivations go, his stated goal is to become Hokage, which is not necessarily wrong, but more than that he really just wants to amass a bunch of cool moves to use out of his great love for the flash and spectacle of many jutsu. In fact, Shunpei actually has little desire to become a shinobi for its own sake; he’s actually utterly terrified of the kill or be killed nature of the ninja lifestyle. However he finds the courage to persist based on the fact that he’d feel terribly guilty for subjecting somebody else to do it in his stead. Furthermore, giving up on the path would be a great moral defeat in his mind. Though he doesn’t looks like he takes anything seriously, he takes many things seriously; he wants be the best shinobi he can be, but he often doubts his abilities and, ironically, fears making a fool out of himself. Because of this he hates being held to a standard of performance and tends to very much dislike the criticism of others. But more than he fears personal failure, he fears failing others; just as Shunpei tries to inspire those around him, it is those around him who inspire him to his best.
CLAN HISTORY
Compared to many other shinobi clans in Konohagakure, the Hatake Clan is quite young, having only been formally recognized as a clan a year or two before the onset of the Great Shinobi War. Although if you were to ask any of the elder members of the clan, they would tell you that they consider themselves to be older than that - to what degree depends on the speaker. Unifying their accounts create the following timeline: The Hatake, or rather the collection of families that would come to compose the Hatake, trace their origins back to a large farming village north of the Land of Fire and adjacent to the Land of Iron. It was named Hiyokawa Village, and it sat along a river that ran through the plan, just outside of a vast forest. Because the area blessed with extremely fertile farmland, conflict tended to come to them despite their neutral nature. The Warring States Period saw the area trade hands again and again, almost overnight in some cases. Fortunately, the kage decree spelt an end to this tumultuous time. Unfortunately however, they remained an important target for those looking to secure a location of prosperous agricultural production, as was the case when the Kokushibyo attempted to capture the village during their short-lived coup. But it was this ebb and flow of occupation, combined with the harsh nature of northern winters, that nurtured the culture of hardiness and community duty that would pervade the Hatake to this day. The first time the community took up arms was during their occupation by the Land of Iron at the onset of their conquest in the northern reaches of the world. Traditionally, they would have just endured and waited for someone to liberate them, but the draconian rule of the samurai ensured that their usual trading routes were disrupted, and the tribute they demanded became more and more avaricious as the years passed. By 59 CE, it was clear that nobody was sending any men to liberate them as they did with the Kokushibyo or during the Warring States era, and that continuing to bide their time was practically suicide. As such, the village leaders of the time organized a resistance militia in secret, and quickly began their campaign of asymmetrical warfare against the occupying samurai, leveraging intimate knowledge of the surrounding terrain, superior survival skills, and a liberal interpretation of how farm and hunting equipment ought to be used. They were far more successful than anyone could have expected, mostly due in part of the samurai’s reluctance to indiscriminately persecute villagers and the increasing paranoia of enemy guerrillas, but that changed when the Land of Iron chose to cut their losses there and devote their men to penetrating the Land of Fire. They would return to the land in two years’ time. The newly-conquered arable ground in the Land of Fire allowed the samurai the ability to target the village’s means of production with impunity, and combined with persecution of notable village families, they attempted to expose the resistance and snuff them out once and for all. Unsurprisingly, the Hatake do not currently have a very high opinion of samurai because of this. The only reason the Hatake continue to survive is because they were able to send word to the Konoha warfront and receive shinobi reinforcements. Though they had secured victory, Hiyokawa Village and its surrounding land was destroyed in the ensuing battle. Furthermore, the population of the village itself hadn’t recovered significantly in the short respite prior, and the final conflict reduced their population to a mere four family units. Because of this, the remaining villagers were sent to Konohagakure as refugees and given a plot of land to continue farming. Rather than accept a life as mere civilians though, many possessed a desire to join Konoha in the war against the samurai gripped their community. While some saw it as a means of revenge, most saw it as a way to pay back the Land of Fire for their vital assistance. However, there was an undeniable gap of skill between the established shinobi and the untrained refugee force. The war would end before any of them could complete proper training. Meanwhile, a different type of divide could be noted between the skilled workers of the city and these unskilled farming peasants. Because of this, the villagers mostly kept to themselves in that section of Konoha farmland, a place which would later become the Hatake compound. After a period of uncertainty, this community of ex-partisans dub themselves “Hatake” in honor of their humble origin, and designed a crest - a 3x3 diamond grid - as an image to evoke that land. The green clan would get their opportunity to prove themselves when the Great Shinobi War broke out, and it is during these conflicts that many Hatake would distinguish themselves as skilled shinobi. While many of the older, more powerful clans still believe they're still largely untested as a shinobi family, there is nobody that can rightfully contest the Hatake's strong allegiance to Konohagakure or their status as an agricultural juggernaut. The customs, heirlooms and skills of the Hatake are very few. The few heirloom weapons they possess are all equipment looted from slain samurai, and they possess no hiden or kekkei genkai. But while the assets they grant their shinobi scion are few, the traditional farming techniques they pass down allow the quality of their crops to far surpass those of other farms. Considering that, it’s probably more accurate to consider the Hatake a clan of farmers that happen to produce a population of ninja, rather than the other way around. Another notable mainstay of the clan is the saying that “before one can cultivate their own growth, they must first cultivate the growth of others.” The uninitiated might consider this a reflection of the fact that they teach all of their clan members a baseline knowledge of plant husbandry in order to build discipline, but really it’s also a reflection of their collectivist mentality.
PERSONAL HISTORY
Following the Great Shinobi War, the peace accords signed by the belligerent villages ensured the transference of the surviving number of captured shinobi back to their homelands. Hatake Yumitsu, Shunpei’s mother, was one of these shinobi, and it was shortly after her exodus from Iwagakure that she fell in love with the medic-nin assigned to her case. It was in the weeks following their marriage that a boy was born to the Hatake Clan. Despite the obviously questionable circumstances regarding the boy’s birth and conception, and the marriage of his parents, Hatake Shunpei was accepted by the clan as the legitimate eldest child of the clan’s next generation...and put under the expectations, both spoken and unspoken, that came with it. Despite being raised under the great love and care of his immediate family and his mother’s own wish that he pursue whichever path he wanted, the more traditionally-minded Hatake - including the clan patriarch - wanted him to go down the same path the firstborn Hatake of previous generations underwent: the life of service as a shinobi. As he grew up, comparisons to his mother and his uncle, the two most prodigious shinobi of the previous Hatake generation, colored the vast majority of the clan’s perception of him, and his own perception of himself as someone so avoidant. In the end, Shunpei was enrolled in the Konoha Academy, and was placed in the class taught by his uncle, Toshiro, which bothered him to no small degree considering the man’s reputation even outside the clan. However, life at the Academy wasn’t close to as bad as he expected. His surprisingly magnetic personality ensured that he at least had plenty of actual friends to laugh and play alongside, including his best friend Tensai, who he was able to hang out with every day and occasionally skipped classes with. Of course, during his time in the Academy there would be some who once thought they could accrue favor with his uncle or one of his friends by taking advantage of him, such perceptions quickly changed once it became readily apparent that how well he was treated wouldn’t necessarily provide a proportional or desirable benefit. So even as the overall downturn of his grades dejected him with every report - which were often passed directly to his family and elders - the presence of people he could count on and people that were, in a way, counting on him, allowed the young boy to maintain a sense of pride and confidence. But at the same time, being constantly surrounded by people whose capabilities quickly began to gulf his own was disheartening to say the least, especially as someone who felt that he had a lot to live up to, and even moreso as someone who had actually bonded with many of these people and felt worse for being even just a little jealous of them. In his free time, Shunpei could mostly be found “screwing around”, to use the simplest and most-widely applicable term, among his modular friend groups, or helping around the clan’s farmhold and the village itself. His personal studies mostly consisted of “training” for the more practical courses, which effectively translated to “have fun fooling around with techniques and tools”. Only rarely could he be found actually studying for his academics, as the practical courses were the ones that most held his interest.
INFLUENCE & RELATIONS

Hatake Taizan, 64 Maternal grandfather. Taizan is the Hatake Clan patriarch and is most well-known among the village for his skill at farming, and the shrewd business practices that make him an absolute menace in the Konoha's produce market. In his youth, he used to fight samurai, but has since retired to something far more suited to him than life as a warrior. They don’t really interact much, save for when Taizan shows up to criticize Shunpei’s academic performance or when the whole clan needs to gather for something or other. Masataka, 34 Father. A medic-nin who married into the clan a month before Shunpei’s birth. He is a firm but fair father who Shunpei holds fond memories of. However, it is very apparent that he plays favorites and that his favorite is not him. For reasons unknown to Shunpei, he has stopped showing up around the house on a consistent basis. However, Shunpei hasn’t thought much about it; he figures that the guy just works late nights or goes out on missions a lot. Nobody has made a big deal about it to him, at any rate. Hatake Yumitsu, 31 Mother. Once a former ANBU captain known as "The Phantom of Konoha" for her mastery of stealth techniques and the art of espionage, which she used to great effect as a spy and assassin behind enemy lines during the Great Shinobi War. She was captured during the Night of the Red Dunes during an attempt to assassinate the three core members of Kurai Heishi's ANBU unit. She only returned home following the conclusion of the war and declared herself unfit for duty following her failure. Fortunately civilian life has treated her well, granting her two children that she loves to dote on. That said, she can be a bit overbearing at times even if she means well. She likes to invite her former coworkers to the house for some food and drink, and wants to meet all of her son's friends. Hatake Toshiro, 24 Maternal uncle. In the past he was a taciturn genius who took part in the Great Shinobi War; now, he is the Head Instructor of the Academy. While he and Toshiro do not have a strained relationship outwardly speaking, Shunpei resents the man as much as he looks up to him. As the standard he believes he must surpass and the standard he knows he hasn't, Shunpei thinks Toshiro's choice is a gross waste of his talent - the proverbial salt in the wound of Shunpei's comparative prodigiouslessness. He's a bit uncomfortable around the guy now, but once upon a time, Shunpei used to bother him for tutoring lessons and mimic his stoic attitude. He still cringes every time he thinks about it. Hatake Sayuri, 7 Annoying younger sister. Shunpei tries to get along with her because he's the oldest, but in practice he mostly just keeps away from her as much as possible. He can't drive himself to hate her for more than an hour or two at a time, so deep down he probably does care about her more than he thinks he does.

Namikaze Yoshiharu, 26 Murakumo Mikoto, 12 Uzumaki Kiyoshi, 12 Friend with (academic) benefits. Though Kiyoshi is notable for his extreme introversion, Shunpei - being Shunpei - has earned his friendship... at least from his perspective. Regardless of whether the feeling is completely mutual, Shunpei is at least exempt from Kiyoshi’s trademark requests for solitude, and is often audience to the redhead’s tutoring. Considering that most aspects of academia aren’t of much interest to the Hatake, this varies in efficacy. The fact that they both keep it up is probably the most significant attestation of their friendship. He does, however, find Kiyoshi’s intellect staggeringly impressive, and takes genuine interest in his fuinjutsu experimentation, often offering ideas of varying feasibility. While Kiyoshi doesn’t often want to hang around Tensai, Shunpei’s been trying his best to make the idea of hanging out with his best friend appeal to the young introvert. This is, as you could expect, rarely successful.

Iburi Kodo, 13 Matsudaira Kiri, 12 Ryuuga Tsume, 12 Curiosity. According to the oldest surviving members of the clan, the ones who remember the Hatake’s old land holdings, she is someone to avoid on grounds of her clan historically raping, pillaging, and burning former Hiyokawa villagers. Shunpei being Shunpei however, doesn’t really care about that kind of thing and was more curious about her person than he was against her existence. This is especially because his father, someone friendly with Tsume’s adoptive mother, told him that she couldn’t be that terrible a person, and that he might as well try to make a friend like his mother wanted. However, apart from a strange initial encounter meant to determine the validity of his clan elders’ stories, they don’t really interact much beyond class assignments where they must. Aburame Katsu, 11 Inuzuka Kegawa, 11 Namikaze Fukushu, 11 Uchiha Tensai, 11 Brother from another mother. They initially met as a result of their mothers being best friends, and have quickly ensured that history had repeated itself. Indeed, if there is anyone that Shunpei could call his best friend forever, it would be Tensai. Most of the time they can be seen hanging around each other, going on many escapades and participating in other assorted acts of tomfoolery. There are exceptions to this, mostly when Shunpei hangs out with his quieter friends, but overall, if one sees Tensai, Shunpei is not far behind. Except for grades, obviously. While some might believe that Tensai and Shunpei only hang out because they’re both trying to be everyone’s friend or that Tensai is just pitying the poor Hatake boy, the real crux of their friendship lies in the fact that Shunpei doesn’t really act like Tensai is anything particularly odd. Not a genius, not an Uchiha, not a bastard - just a kid who likes to have fun. That said, he would be lying if he said he wasn’t a little disheartened by how effortlessly Tensai demonstrates his skills. Haruno Ren, 10 Family friends’ son. As the offspring of the Haruno Clan traders and the Hatake Clan farmers, and two medical shinobi from the same class, it was only natural that these two would have met at some point, whether at an inter-clan gathering or via prompting from their parents to interact at school. While some may be inclined to believe that they must be friends based on Shunpei’s outgoing personality and the ties between each of their parents, they’re little more than well-acquainted with each other. That said he is more well-acquainted with the “Ghost of the Academy Library” than many of their contemporaries can attest to being, even if they aren’t strictly friends. Sarutobi Kenjiro, 10

Uchiha Narumi, 31 Mom's BFF and Tensai's mom. Shunpei doesn't know about the unfortunate fate that she had recently met, but he does hold fond memories of the Uchiha woman that made him feel like a second son. Aburame Koyomi, 28 Uncle's former teammate that he sometimes talks about. They know of each other based on hearsay from Toshiro, but have never actually met in person. There's a good chance Shunpei has some strange preconceptions in his head. Kagetsu Kitanai, 28 "That Guy" or: Masataka's medical corps kouhai. He doesn't know much about this guy, but his dad [s]complains[/s] talks about him occasionally, sometimes in comparison to Shunpei himself. Apparently he's "good at what he does, but is a big friggin' weirdo" among other, more grumbly things that he doesn't quite hear and probably wouldn't be allowed to repeat. Apparently, he's also "probably dead." Shunpei just assumes that they were probably friends, a suggestion which his mother reinforces, and would likely be inclined to treat him as such. Shunpei's dad can only sigh in defeat but aleast he won't have to deal with that, right? Senju Hotsuma, 28 Uncle's other former teammate that he sometimes talks about. From what Shunpei has heard, this guy is some kind of implacable badass. Also, apparently a wonderful cook?

CHAKRA NATURE
Water
SPECIAL TRAITS
Chakra Potency: Though his physical gifts are nothing of note, Shunpei has been blessed with a great amount of exceptional chakra well suited for augmenting the efficacy and efficiency of his jutsu. His control of this chakra isn’t innately unusual negatively or positively, and as with most genin, it definitely needs practice if he wants to get his control down to an art. Shape and Nature Transformation: Another trait that Shunpei definitely possesses but has gotten extremely little mileage out of is his innate affinity for chakra transformation. As the foundation for personalized ninjutsu, it grants him a high potential for the research and development of techniques. However, as far as priorities go Academy students aren’t mandated to learn a vast array of jutsu, which makes this skill of somewhat limited use to somebody as inexperienced as he. Softest Hair: It's canon now, sorry not sorry.
FOCUS & SKILLS
General Ninjutsu: Considering his natural talents as well as his personality, this is Shunpei's most compatible and most potent discipline. As much as he wishes he were a talentless hack in order to justify his bad lifestyle choices, it’s more accurate to say that he’s a late-bloomer with latent affinity towards advanced combat grade ninjutsu - a savant who fails to comprehend the basics while capable of accomplishing things master wish they could. In the past, he was provided little opportunity to accurately demonstrate his affinity for more esoteric ninjutsu as a result of the Academy curricula, but fortunately under a jonin sensei he’ll likely have an opportunity to spread his wings. Genjutsu: Likely the sole practical factor that sets Shunpei apart from his classmates was his burgeoning potential for decoding and deploying the most esoteric of the three basic ninja disciplines. However, as genjutsu is very unpopular and largely bypassed in favor of more concrete effects, he has received very few accolades for his aptitude. He himself doesn't pay much attention to it either, favoring the flashiness of ninjutsu. However, it is also said that to properly use genjutsu, an individual must possess the scintillating insight to craft potent illusions. Could this be a sign of the young Hatake's concealed intellect? Probably not. A less charitable, but likely more accurate, person might suggest that he's only figured out how to weaponize his keen perceptions and overactive imagination.
EQUIPMENT & INVENTORY
Shunpei is armed with the standard array of shinobi tools: wire, kunai, explosive tags, smoke bombs and the like. The only nonstandard component of his arsenal is a ko-wakizashi marked on the hilt with his clan’s crest. It was given as a graduation gift, and is sheathed horizontally along his lower back.
JUTSU

N/A

N/A

N/A

Hiding in Surface Technique Sly Mind Affect Technique

Demonic Illusion: [s]Hell[/s] Heck Viewing Technique Temporary Paralysis Technique

Academy Techniques

CUSTOM JUTSU

Name Text.
