[indent]Due to his androgynous features, Basil is sometimes mistaken for a beautiful woman in the early to mid twenties range. He has a very mellow-looking face, with large eyes and thick lashes. His skin is pale, but color is brought to it through contrast with his long white hair. His height also contributes to the misunderstanding as he stands at a relatively short 164 cm (5'5") and has a slender build with thin shoulders.

Basil usually wears a loose, white long-sleeved shirt which covers up the fact that his arms quite toned underneath. His affluent background means that most of his clothes are made of silk or other luxurious fabrics, but he stays away from extravagant designs and gets them specially tailored to be very easy to move and fight in.[/indent]

[indent]Due to his upbringing, Basil is generally very polite and cordial. He has a soft voice, and around strangers and new acquaintances, he speaks with careful regard to sensitivities. As he usually shows a genuine interest in others with his curious nature and has a seemingly high tolerance, he makes friends and connections easily.

However, Basil is very naive and unused to dealing with less pleasant individuals, or any difficulties in general. His life was stable and lacked many setbacks beyond the incident that left him orphaned. Although he has a superficial awareness of his shortcomings, his naive confidence in his abilities and lack of practical experience makes him ill-prepared for the trials that lie ahead.

Fortunately, Basil is driven by the eternal quest for knowledge and new experiences. It is a persistent motivation that pushes him past rationality. Even painful experiences are in their own way exciting to him, he sees all experiences as sides of the same coin, and all part of a life which must be lived; this was one way which he used to deal with the tragedy of his parents' deaths. His belief is that the more varied and colorful experiences one has in life, the more worthwhile that life was.

[indent]Basil has had a stable but mildly interesting life thus far. He was born to an old and wealthy family, and was heavily coddled and taught the manners of high society. However, after an accident when he was seven claimed the lives of both his parents, he was taken in by his father's sister, the Three Star Information Hunter, Jillian Lightbourne, who lived a much more lax bachelor lifestyle. While it was a more free environment, Basil was often left alone as Jillian was more often than not occupied with her work. Due to the sensitive contents of her home, she could not hire a babysitter for him either.

At first, Jillian tried to occupy him by sending him to school. It was a new experience for him as his parents had always hired tutors, but after a year, the novelty of school life wore off while the content was far too boring and easy for him. Seeing this, his aunt decided to just let him stay at home and pursue learning of his own interest, while officially he was "homeschooled". Left to his own devices, he created an encyclopedic knowledge base with his access to the internet, the Deep Web, and Jillian's private library of arcane and confidential information.

In addition to his independent studies, Basil took up all the chores of the household allowing his aunt to focus more on her work. This allowed him to become acquainted with the personalities of the local market, which was located at the intersection of several ethnic districts. With his curiosity, he eventually became well versed in various foreign cuisines and his cooking skill has earned him the appreciation of many of Jillian's guests, who are often famous or important personalities in Elancia and beyond.

Other than these guests, Jillian has also invited teachers, who even include other Hunters, on Basil's request to teach him things like martial arts and horse-riding. He has been all over Elancia, to many museums and historic sites, but never has Jillian allowed him to go out of the country with her. This excursion to take the Hunter Exam is without her permission or knowledge, and may well be his first and last act of adolescent rebellion.

[indent]Basil's greatest asset is his encyclopedic knowledge. He has a near photographic memory and has read countless books and databases, some of them even containing forbidden information hidden by government organisations across the world such as the existence of Nen.

He may know of Nen, but he was never allowed to learn it. His martial arts teacher who hailed from the Nen Temples of the East had demonstrated it for him before, and Jillian even reluctantly showed him her own ability after much pestering, but she prevented him from awakening his own. He is reasonably competent in a fight however, capable of taking out ordinary thugs. Being raised by a Hunter, Basil has always kept fit following his aunt's morning fitness regime.
