The walls shuddered with mechanical movement, and the entire little room creaked and vibrated violently, like an old machine shaking off the rust. The room lurched, throwing Aro back into the pillows, as the water descended slowly toward her -- or, rather, as the elevator raised her up toward the water's inverted surface.

The cat's ears flicked, and its grin flashed. [b]"That's exactly the one!"[/b] it chirped happily. [b]"Goodbye!"[/b]

With that, Howl turned around and leaped out through the solid wall of the rising elevator as if the cat were nothing more than a spirit, leaving Aro alone with the encroaching water.

[b]"You see those circles there?"[/b] asked Howl as it pressed its paws against the wall; the cat pointed at five symbols in five circles that were carved in relief on the bronze wall. [b]"Press the swirly rippley one, and you can get out of here!"[/b]
