[@deadpixel101] It would be for caution, and if they take a hostile stance and these people were to have some way to fight back it would be bad for them. Which is why the King will decide what happens when he sees them.

Basically, anything could come through that gap, but the people won't all want first impressions to be that of hostile. Some will act first ask questions later.
