It’s a pretty good deal.
║ Appearance ║
One of the first things people notice about Jareth is his hair, which has been dyed a thick, inky black since before he even arrived at Westworth; no one at the high school even knows what it’s natural color is. It is obvious that Jareth cares a lot about what his mane looks like, as it is always blow-dried to a fluffy, soft texture, and then flat-ironed to perfection. The ebony fringe sits just above his black-rimmed silvery blue eyes, mostly out of his sight, but sometimes it covers his left eye when it is in need of a trim. These raven locks curtain a forehead that he himself considers to be too big for your average human and, like his natural hair color, few people have ever seen it. A second notable - oftentimes jarring - bodily feature of Jareth is his physique. The sixteen year-old boy stands at a short five-foot-seven and weighs only around 120 pounds soaking wet. Jareth is thin…like, ‘holy shit does this kid even eat? … is he okay?!’ levels of thin. The answer to these questions is: yes, he does eat and, yes, he is actually very physically healthy. Jareth has always been small, falling behind his peers on both the average height and weight charts all throughout his childhood. These days he has more or less caught up to his classmates in height, but the combination of his vegetarian diet, love of morning runs, and natural metabolism keeps him impressively lean. A final noteworthy point, perhaps the most prominent in a small town like Westworth, is Jareth’s look. In a sea of baggy blue jeans, flannel, and leather work boots, Jar sticks out more than a scarecrow in the fields. He is one of the few males in school with piercings: ¾ wooden gauges in both ears, a steel 14g ring in his left nostril, and steel spider bite-style rings set to the right side of his bottom lip. Jareth got the twin lip piercings freshman year and the rings have since chipped his right lateral incisor slightly, which does little to mar his beaming white smile on the rare occasions that he chooses to flash it. It isn’t that Jareth is constantly scowling, exactly, but he does always seem to be a little caught up in his thoughts, or sad… or just lost? Staple clothing items in Jareth’s closet include painfully tight skinny jeans - often adorned with belts and chains that make it so you can always hear Jareth coming before you see him, and jackets - army style, canvas, or leather (fake, of course), sometimes even a combination. This is partially a style choice, but mostly a practical necessity, because he is always freezing. Only in the most roasting days of the summer will you catch Jareth wearing anything less than a dark long sleeved tee, at least. In addition to clothing, Jareth sports some rather unusual accessories, including multiple layered necklaces of varying lengths, which he switches out daily. Some are chains and others black cords, a few have pendants like a fake bullet, a dull-edged razor blade, or ironically worn crosses and rosaries. Lastly - but most important to Jareth - is a collection of multicolored bracelets that take up about 3 inches of his right wrist. The dingy strips of fabric, braided string, and beads were made for him by other kids in the Denver Children’s Home, his pre teenaged friends, and the bracelets hold deep sentimental value to Jareth. They will continue to remain on his wrist for as long as they will fit. At face value, he appears to be your average burnout stereotype, and in some ways he is. He smokes a lot of pot, lives for creating art and playing his guitar, and doesn’t seem to care about much else but living in the now. Jareth has never excelled in school, he scrapes by with average C grades and the occasional B if he finds the subject interesting enough. He maintains a healthy social life and fills his free time with parties, bonfires, camping trips in the woods, floating in the summertime, and boarding in the winter. At times he can be a little immature and wild, like he is trying to live out a happy childhood and his teenage years all at once… because, he kind of is, now that he has the ability to. Jar has a small group of tight friendships, a wide group of friendly acquaintances, and just a few people that he very obviously does not get along with. He doesn’t mind that people see him as violent, rebellious, or troubled, in fact, he encourages the ‘bad boy’ reputation he’s built up - it’s sexy, right?

What I Know: Most of what you see? It’s a front - a finely crafted facade to cover a crumbling, unsteady foundation. Jareth has issues, a lot of them. Growing up in the children’s home and failed foster care accrued Jareth a laundry list of mental afflictions. Some, like the night terrors, dissolved in time. Others, like the depression, anxiety, and ODD, they require lifelong medication and therapy to cope with. Perhaps they too will go away, in time, at least the ODD is starting to. Currently, Jareth has found that a mix of SSRIs, music, sweet Colorado green, and required bi-weekly sessions to ‘talk about it’ is pretty much working for him. Surprisingly enough, he’s feeling more emotionally and mentally stable than he ever has. Though, if you ask him, he’ll still says this place is hell. Literal hell. Those closest to Jareth know some of his story, but nobody knows absolutely everything. He keeps it hidden, locked inside as much as he can, afraid of driving people away with his burdens. He wants to be happy, to surround himself with lifelong friendships and to find real love, but he’s also scared. It’s not so much the friendships that are terrifying, but the love part. His twin fears of commitment and, ultimately, abandonment keep him from ever getting too attached to romantic partners. This is also the reason he chafes against his foster parents so much... if he dislikes them, it won’t hurt as much when they decide that they don’t want him anymore. Though, now that he is sixteen and mostly on track to graduate next year, these fears aren’t really holding up as much. The only one standing in the way of his own happiness is himself, and he is starting to see that.

"The best music happens when you have a personal connection to it. He can play the piano, guitar, sing, and keep a beat on a drumset. Right now it’s just a solo thing, he’s learning as much as he can, improving his craft and expressing himself. He’s singing and playing while alone. He’s singing and playing with friends. He’s singing and playing because he can’t not be singing and playing. But, someday he hopes to make a living doing what he is most passionate about - to join a band, or start one, but he definitely needs to get the fuck out of here!
║ Fears ║
☠ Commitment ☠ Not making it in the music industry ☠ Abandonment
║ Likes ║
✔ Music - making it and listening to it. His teenaged birth mother gave him up for adoption immediately upon giving birth and, to this day, he hasn’t actually met her. It wasn’t one of those happy adoptions either, as his first set of ‘parents’ didn’t work out and, as such, he wound up in the foster care system. This lack of unconditional parental love or stability lead to behavioral problems throughout his childhood, which made finding a forever home all the more difficult. Jareth bounced from home to home - some families were too soft and kind to handle a ‘troubled kid’, and others were just plain abusive. All in all, he had a total of six failed placement homes. When Brian and Charlotte McKinney stepped foot in the home, Jar had unknowingly met his match. The McKinney’s couldn’t have child of their own, so they sought out adoption facilities in nearby cities. When they arrived at the Denver Children’s Home, they were sure they would finally find a child to bring home… what they didn’t expect was for it to be a moody pre teen boy. Charlotte was and is a registered nurse, and Brian works as a correctional officer, both commute to Littleton and choose to live in Westworth because it is quaint and close to Char’s family. Charlotte’s professional background makes her empathetic, and Brian, well Brian is just a real fucking hard ass. Together, they wound up being the parents that Jareth needed - not the ones that he wanted, but the ones he needed, and still needs. Jareth entered the Westworth seventh grade in January, already half way through the school year. He was the shiny new thing in one dull ass town, and the students were talking about his arrival before he even stepped foot in the doors. All elbows and knees (even more so then than he is now), with his unique style and long dyed hair, he was an immediate target for the redneck bully crowd. One towering giant - seriously, he was huge, and Jareth was pretty sure he didn’t belong in middle school, either - approached him on his first day and gave him a less than subtle once over. “Are you wearing makeup, City Boy?” he had said, laughing and encouraging his buddies to join in on the fun. Jar had been through this before, the whole new kid hazing process; Now was a defining moment, it was the first impression that would shape his reputation for the duration of his stay at Westworth, however short that might be. So, Jareth unapologetically looked the kid dead in the eyes, glaring in eerie silence, and then brushed past to walk by. “And bracelets too? Hey, don’t walk away from me, faggot!” he said and grabbed at his wrist. That was it, like a switch flipped in Jareth’s brain from passive to aggressive in 0.2 seconds. Jar whirled around and clipped the kid hard in his jaw. His surprise was obvious, that a scrawny runt like this would even dare, but Jareth used this to his advantage and laid in with a second and third punch to a cheek and eye. A crowd of onlookers quickly gathered. When his fists weren’t doing the damage he saw fit, Jareth reeled back and actually headbutted him right in the nose, it was savage. Blood poured from the homophobe’s nose and Jareth was left dazed with an angry red mark on his forehead. In this daze he felt a hand on his shoulder, pulling him back from the bleeding kid. Jareth violently turned towards the source of touch and the blonde boy flinched and stepped back. Jar sneered something along the lines of back the fuck off before pushing his way through the crowd and towards the exit. And so, Jareth made himself known at Westworth by getting nearly a week of out of school suspension on his first day and telling his now best friend to ‘fuck off’. Apparently, that wasn’t enough to scare little Remy. When Jareth arrived back at school the following week, most students gave him a wide berth in halls, although they never stopped their gossipy whispers. Remy, though, he hopped right up to Jareth - literally, it was like the kid had springs in his shoes - and asked him if he was okay. This was a weird question because, well, he wasn’t really the loser of that scuffle. The energetic blonde became Jareth’s unrequested, self-appointed guide to life in Westworth. It was through him that Jareth met his closest friends and found as much of a niche as he could for himself in this tiny town. He even convinced him to join the school band, fucking marching band. But it’s not so bad, life is good now, and getting better.
