[@Muttonhawk] Sounds like you want something "Dark Wave", like Nox Arcana, or more on point, Arcana (unrelated to the other group).

Sadly it has been 8-9 years since I listen to those dudes, so I really do not remember the GOOD tracks, but if you want a good selection of their stuff, there is this Civilization Mod called Fall from Heaven 2, it is easy to access its soundtrack, just go asset > sounds.

There is also some old Noriko Mitose stuff that definitely did a darker godly tone but after a few youtube purges, there is a gap between 1999 and 2008, as most fans either care about the really old stuff or the more late career stuff, which is still godly, (I [url=https://youtu.be/qfRGm5cWQJk]mean[/url], [url=https://youtu.be/t4sw2z6UbRc]goddamn[/url]) but not dark at all, and very voice heavy.

Maybe there are some soundtracks I know that fit the bill, but frankly, my mood has been into more whimsical and melodic stuff so I just tend to remember that kind of stuff while others stay in a "probably exists but I cannot pinpoint".
