On queue, a group of girls dressed up in workout clothing danced along to the melody in sync, their sneakers occasionally screeching against the smooth surface of the wooden stage. While their bodies moved as one, Audrey stood facing them at the front, a look of pure concentration on her beautiful face. She paced the front of the room, carefully studying her teammate’s performance. She marked each beat of the song with a snap of her fingers, making sure they were all following the routine and keeping up with the tempo. About halfway through the song, one of the girls missed a beat, which caused her to fall behind. Soon enough, the perfect synchrony that had reigned at the start of the song was lost, and Audrey was not pleased. “Stop stop stop stop stop!” Audrey called out, pausing the music and walking back to the front of the group. The girls in the team looked up at her with big, scared eyes. Hands on her hips, Audrey sent a glare in the direction of a tall, freckled girl at the back of the formation. “Jensen, FOCUS! We’ve got the District competition this Saturday, and if you don’t get your act together by Wednesday I’ll be forced to sit you down for it. Got it?” The captain waited until an intimidated-looking Freckles Jensen quickly nodded her head nervously before turning back to the rest of the team. “The same goes for everyone else here. NOBODY leaves this stage until we get this routine right today! We’ll take it from the top. Into positions, ladies, LET’S GO! ” The girls scrambled to get into their positions as fast as possible. They all knew that Audrey was nothing short of a dictator when it came to practice, and how her intensity level rose whenever competition dates were nearby. The girls also knew that they did not want to displease their captain if they wanted to remain on the team, so their best bet was to put on their big girl pants and give over their 100% on each practice. For this round, Audrey instructed their team to watch as she performed the song by herself. She hoped that by seeing her execute the routine correctly they would study her moves, take notes on what they could improve and apply the observations into their individual performances, thus improving the group’s performance as well. The dance team girls did as they were told. However, one of the girls’ eyes had drifted away from the team captain and instead began to sweep over the auditorium seats. It was then when she noticed that they had a stranger in their midst. She was about to open her mouth to call out the person -after all, it could be a spy overlooking the practice to take the information to a rival school- before his identity dawned on her. The handsome face with the foreign features, the gorgeous blue eyes and the impeccable sense of high-end style on a teenager could only belong to one person…The young woman could only smirk at the recognition. Just as Audrey was getting ready to press play on her iPhone to start practice again after instructing the girls to get into position, the young woman who had spotted the man discreetly walked away from her position and approached the captain. “Looks like Daddy wants to claim his ass back…” she muttered in Audrey’s ear, taking advantage of her captain’s bent down position to grab a handful of the famous Latina bottom that made her friend famous. Audrey instantly shot back up and turned to look up at her, shock visible on her sweaty, flushed face. “What did you just say?” she nearly shouted, brown eyes wide. The loud outburst called the attention of the rest of the girls, their expressions mirroring curiosity. Still smirking, the teammate who had addressed Audrey was pointing to a seat in the middle top of the auditorium. All the girls turned to look, and the buzz of chatter that erupted after a collective surprised gasp was instantaneous. By the time Audrey looked back in the direction the girl was pointing to, Alexandros was already heading out. It seemed the young man felt the team’s eyes on his back -or heard the hushed conversations that suddenly filled the auditorium-, because with his hand on the door he turned to look back at the auditorium stage. For a moment, their eyes met: sea blue with chocolate brown. And for that instant, it was as if they were back to the first day of school. Captivated by each other in such a way that the world stopped spinning, everyone else disappeared and all that mattered was each other. For a moment, Audrey’s guard fell, and a smitten look came across her features. But the moment was over as fast as it had happened. Alexandros broke the stare, pushed the door open and exited the auditorium. There was silence in the room now. The girls looked at each other, exchanging meaningful glances but too afraid to say the wrong thing and bring Audrey’s wrath upon them. Until... “How does that ese have the nerve to show up his face here after everything?!” Lola Marin spat, letting out an angry sigh. Half-Caucasian and half-Mexican Lola was best described as Audrey’s personal guard dog. The long-haired girl had a sweet face and a petite frame, but beneath it hid an anger and temper so big it made everyone think twice about crossing her or any of her friends. Some said it even rivaled Audrey’s, and Audrey would agree: whereas her loss of temper was only seen in private and only by a select group of people, Lola’s had no restrictions. If you pissed her off, you would be sure that everyone present would be a witness to how they chewed you out. Add that to a loyalty beyond words, amazing dancing skills and a great sense of fashion, and you would know just why she was one of the members of the most coveted clique in Beverly Hills High: The A Team. “I bet you anything all he wanted was another view of this magnificent body.” Katrina Ashby purred, grabbing Audrey’s ass again. Audrey playfully smacked Kat’s hand away, but the smile on her face said she didn’t mind her friend’s actions. Ah, blonde bombshell Kat: seventeen years old, with a killer body that spelled TROUBLE for anyone who came across her, and a natural ability to make every sentence she said sound suggestive or sexually-charged. She was, without a doubt, the raunchy one of The A Team. “I don’t know. I still find it a bit creepy that he was just lurking around here staring like some kind of weirdo.” Phoebe Sterling mused, frowning with a finger pressed against her jaw. She was the angel of The A Team, or so you would think… To everyone at school, it was a mystery as to why sweet and thoughtful Phoebe would choose such a vicious group of girls as her friends. But The A Team girls knew the reason why: back in her elementary school days, Phoebe was often bullied by being small, fragile and an overall easy target. She’d put up with it for years, until she decided her fate was going to change in her freshman year of high school. Now in a position of power, she uses her nice girl reputation to get information from people that’s valuable to the girls. Truth be told, Phoebe is one of The A Team’s best and most valuable assets. “I’m with Lola on this one. It fails to dawn on me how he has the nerve to show up here.” Leslie said, also frowning in the direction Alex had been in, while Lola flipped her hair with a smirk on her face at her comments being backed up. Audrey, however, had stopped listening to everyone: her mind was racing. Ever since her and Alexandros met, things between them had been nothing but a game of cat and mouse. It was always a constant battle of egos, a never-ending war whose battles were won by who hurt the others’ pride the most. In the process, she had found herself feeling eternally stressed, on edge and increasingly more vicious. She’d become emotional, self-conscious, stupid, jealous, impulsive… All because of some guy who merely saw her as nothing more than a challenge. This little stunt of him giving her mixed signals by coming to spy on her after arriving arm in arm with the Florence chick was the deal breaker. She would not allow a man -no matter how good-looking- to cause her this amount of distress anymore. Audrey Huntsberg was not a toy, much less some bored rich kid’s pastime or ‘flavor of the month’. It was time to give herself the place she deserved. From today on, Alexandros Mossos was yesterday’s news. The game was over. She was done playing. “Auby? AUBY! You okay? Audrey blinked hard, pulled away from her thoughts and back to reality. She turned to look at Leslie, and found that the rest of The A Team was staring at her with worried expressions. She gave them all a reassuring smile. “Yeah, sorry, drifted off for a bit there.” she told them, her voice uncharacteristically soft. “I just realized some things. I’ll tell you all when we get to Phoebe’s later.” Realizing that the rest of the girls in the team were eavesdropping -probably hoping to hear some juicy gossip about the Queen Bee-, Audrey transitioned back into team captain mode. She shot the girls a glare as she took her position at the front of the stage. “Break time is OVER, ladies! Back to positions! And remember, we’re not leaving until we get this RIGHT.” “5, 6, 7, 8!”
