He smells the booze loli, and the shota. And by anime logic, they have to be strong if they're main characters. He can smell the plot on them. That and I'd imagine he can just sorta tell. Gauging how strong something is based on instinct seems like something he would have picked up from his survivalist skill and his training with Captain Aldreine.
