By his name, red rookie Lightning McQueen sees himself as a racecar all about speed. Initially a selfish hot-shot who's poised to become Piston Cup's next champion, Lightning gets sidetracked into Radiator Springs, a small town on Route 66 that's completely forgotten by the outside world. Meeting its colorful residents, like snazzy Sally, hyper-detailed Ramone, and honest tow-truck Mater, Lightning learns that both teamwork and friendship are more significant than fame. A few months later, on the other side of the country, lies the tropical, underground world of street racing. Thunder McQueen is the spunky, competitive conquerer of the nightly streets in Miami. Every win quickly rose her into fame and respect, as much as Lightning. 

These two famous racers, living in two very different lives are, in fact, brother and sister, estranged at a young age, due to family complications. Fate brings them back together in the overseas World Grand Prix, hosted by electric car Sir Miles Axlerod, who required racers to use his newly-created fuel "Allinol". However, nothing is what it seems in the tournament: the competitors start to break down on the track, and suspicion pointed to their malfunctioned fuel-tanks. Mysteriously, the racers were being replaced with a newer generation of racers, particularly Jackson Storm, a faster, stronger climbing-champion who held a grudge against Lightning. Soon, these accidents reach the red champion, resulting him to become critically injured, forcing him to drop out of the competition. No matter how much he refuses to let Thunder take his spot, she goes against his wishes.

After an incident with a mysterious car named Rod "Torque" Redline, she becomes a target for the real culprits behind the "accidents": lemon cars, led by Professor Zündapp, and their anonymous crime-lord, secretly planning to secure their oil profits, by using an Electromagnetic pulse emitter, disguised as a camera, to induce vicious results for all users of Allinol. With help from British intelligence Finn Mcmissile and Holley Shiftwell, Thunder and Lightning will have to bring back a stormy comeback to find the real mastermind behind this dangerous espionage.
