When you say "power of darkness," how is darkness being cast as a physical entity? I'm just confused by how he's effectively extracting a substance from areas where there are no photons.

Travel isn't a big deal, whether he can only go where shadows are or not. Most interuniversal warping happens in similar ways on the backend anyway.
