Since his family kinda disowned him, he's perhaps not technically a merchant. However, i'd guess a men-at-arms would go into this category as well? Or perhaps knight is not a nobleman title in this setting, and refers to what i usually call man-at-arms? (Non nobles who are hired by a noble, often knight to be a elite bodyguard and/or battlefield unit. As it says on the perry miniatures mounted men-at-arms box, there was usually about 3 men-at-arms for every proper knight, all would have similar gear though. This is the 1400s though.) Regardless, i just assume Claus is middle class. Unless he is knighted and/or landed.
