The ship can be our first asset. I think that having some kind of, like, artifact doomship would be a good way to put a pirate crew on equal footing with the UFP. Maybe we start with a more "normal" ship, but maybe find the nice one in some ruins? As for assets...I like the idea of new people getting gadgets, but I think the specific one should be up to the players? Maybe membership just gives a new piece of equipment and a new ability? They're useful for pretty much any character, they provide a nice, tangible benefit, and like they could both be used for nice character building, where, like, they go get whatever new equipment they've got or do a bit where they train with another character.
