The problem is [i]right here.[/i] This isn't a standalone action, it's an interaction. The response ball should have passed to Loki.

If we backpedal just a little bit and have Mal notice the captain well before she decides to be noticed, the two of them can play from there and the rest of the characters responding to the scene can continue from whatever follows.
