The study was ample but cozy at the same time, with three dark blue couches arranged rectangularly around a long, white wooden table that was currently filled with books, notebooks, pens, highlighters and loose paper sheets. A 60-inch flat screen TV was propped up against the wall at the end of the room. Leslie sat with her legs tucked in underneath her in the shortest of the couches, while Lola and Phoebe sat in one of the longest ones. In the couch right in front of them sat Kat and Audrey. All girls had a small handful of papers in their hands, which they seemed to be reading intently. “Alright: what historic event happened on 1898?” Leslie asked the girls, reading off the questions Mr. Jones had given them as a review for the next day’s test. “The French Revolution!” Kat cried out, raising her hand while looking expectantly at her friends. They all rolled their eyes and shook their heads, disappointed at Kat’s impulsive -and very wrong- answer. “It’s not the French Revolution, Katrina,” Lola said, shaking her head. “You better start taking this test seriously. I hope you know that if you don’t freaking pass the school’s not gonna let you go to regionals.” “And if you don’t go to regionals, Audrey’s going to murder you.” Leslie added sassily, flipping back her black-haired mane and turning to look at Audrey. “Right, Auby?” Audrey, who had been absentmindedly shifting her focus back and forth from studying and the TV, suddenly sat up straight. “WAIT!” Audrey called out, holding her hand up in the direction of the girls as a sign of silence. The A Team, who had been in the middle of explaining to Kat the events of the Hispano-American War, wore matching perplexed expressions but immediately fell silent. Audrey’s chocolate brown eyes were now glued to the 60-inch flat screen TV at the bottom of the room. On screen was news anchoress Vivian Cardoza, a small picture of Francis Sauveterre in the top right corner and the headline ‘Mayor Francis Sauveterre’s Corruption Scandal’ in big, bold, flashy letters at the bottom. Was she reading correctly? Did this mean what she thought it did? “Quick! PAUSE IT, raise the volume, rewind and play it again!” the brunette exclaimed in Phoebe’s direction. The stunned blonde quickly grabbed the remote from the table and did as she was told. “In today’s shocking news, Beverly Hills’ Mayor from the Republican party Mr. Francis Sauveterre, has been formally accused by the Los Angeles Police Department of fraud and corruption. This after a long investigation revealed that he had been siphoning off funds from police pensions for as long as eight years. The funds, which go up to over $70 million dollars, were stashed in offshore accounts as to keep their existence obscured. Furthermore, a reliable source in Town Hall has informed PNBC that upon getting that he’d been discovered, the Mayor attempted to cover up his crimes by rearranging funds from several departments to make up for the losses. Other sources claim that Mr. Sauveterre placed a gag order on any individual speaking to the press; and that if they did, they would be laid off and sued for breach of contract. As an update to this story, I have just gotten word that our mayor, Francis Sauveterre has retained a high profile lawyer from Miami: Mr. Conrad Wells, of the famous Wells-Smith law firm. Mr. Wells is known for representing various billionaires and celebrities, his most notable and recent client being known-Mobster Gabriel DiVale of the DiVale Crime Family. As of now, we do not know why he has retained Mr. Wells, but we will update you shortly. As always, stick with us for the quickest updates of the stories you care about. We will be right back after a brief commercial break.” And just like that, Vivian’s face zoomed out, and commercials began to play out. There was silence in the room for a few long seconds. Then, out of the blue, loud cheering erupted from the girls and rippled across the study. The A Team had tossed their reviews onto the table, leaped up from the couches and began to jump up and down. They went as far as to leave their enclosed space so they could continue jumping up and down while cheering and embracing in a group hug. Of course, the girl who was smiling the biggest and cheering the loudest was Audrey. After they were done with their little victory dance, the panting girls slumped back to their respective seats. Now that the initial shock was gone came the questions about not only how, but who had managed to uncover this scandal. Their answer came in the least expected way. “Enough with the conspiracy theories. The thing with the Mayor? It was me.” The A Team’s heads nearly snapped with how fast they turned to look at the person speaking. Standing by the study room’s door was a young woman that looked to be just a few years older than them. Dressed in a dark blue pencil skirt and blazer set with a pair of nude-colored pumps and her shiny, long blonde hair pulled back in an elegant ponytail, she looked as if she’d just come out of the office. Her stunning face, with similar features to those of Phoebe, wore a smug, satisfied expression. Her French-manicured hand was resting on her waist, and from the way she was positioned they knew she had obviously been eavesdropping for a bit before deciding to intervene. “Fallon?” Phoebe said, brow furrowed questioningly. “How in the world are you possibly involved in all of that?” “Easy,” Fallon began, that smug smile still in place as she walked to take a seat beside her younger sister. “I graduated college last June, and not even two weeks after graduation Dad had found me a job at City Hall. As you all know, my degree was a double major in Accounting and Finances, so the position I was in was obviously as an accountant in that department. Fast forward to like three weeks. I find myself doing the city’s books, and I keep noticing a bunch of irregularities. The thing is, they were sneaky irregularities, as if done on purpose to cover something up. At this point I was getting super suspicious, so I photocopied some of the shady documents and contacted the authorities.” Fallon paused for dramatic effect, purposely trying to build anticipation from the girls. She removed the hair tie that kept her ponytail in place, letting the blonde locks cascade down before continuing. “Well, it turns out that the LAPD had an ongoing fraud and corruption investigation against our lovely Mayor, and my information was the very piece of the puzzle they needed to finally slam him. They asked me to continue giving them information to strengthen their case, which I obviously did because my parents didn’t raise no crooked young. And then fast forward to today: the arrest goes down. Not only did I shine light upon the illegal deeds of the man who’s supposed to have our town’s best interests, but my identity's staying a secret and I’m getting a juicy paycheck thanks to my cooperation. So if you guys don’t hear from me for a few weeks, I’ll probably be taking a much-needed vacation to Europe soon.” Audrey, who had been listening to Fallon’s story attentively, jumped up and tackled the older blonde in a hug. “I fucking LOVE YOU, Fallon Sterling!” Meanwhile, Fallon’s arms were pinned to her sides, her face that of a woman who was greatly confused at what was going on. “Ooookayyyy? You’re welcome, I guess?” Audrey let go of Fallon and turned her attention back to her best friends. “I think this requires a celebration, don’t you guys think?!” she exclaimed happily, walking in the direction of the wine cabinet in one corner of the room. She carefully gathered six wine glasses and handed one to every girl while leaving her own on the table. Then, she walked back to the cabinet, grabbed a champagne bottle, opened it and walked back to her friends. Still smiling, Audrey poured each of her friends a glass before ultimately filling her own. “A toast!” Audrey declared, holding her champagne glass up. The rest of the girls followed suit, their glasses sparking with the bubbly light yellow contents inside. “To Fallon, for unknowingly helping me regain my place and exposing a disgusting criminal abusing his position of power! To the LAPD, for taking action and ridding Beverly Hills of a shit politician! And, finally, to my dear friend karma: the one thing in this damn world besides you all to always have my back. Because nobody fucks with Audrey Huntsberg and gets away with it. Cheers! “CHEERSSSSSS!” In unison, The A Team and Fallon clinked their wine glasses together, raised them to their lips and drank.
