God Eater... beautiful weapon. Honestly it seems like I'm too worried about making something too OP. But then RWBY is all about wildly extraordinary people. So it sounds like I could make a non sentient AI with pretty decent capability. If this char developed the goal of building towards a true artificial intelligence would such a thing be within a student's grasp?
We do have the example of Penny who was, is (is, dammit, is) a fully sentient AI, so the technology does exist. Having the goal would be fine, but advanced AI would probably be out of a student's grasp. That being said, if you can come up with an entirely reasonable reason (aka backstory) you can do or have nearly anything within reason. So if said student was the spawn of a genius engineer who specializes in AI, they might own a robotic companion who was given to them, then voila. Advanced AI. Of course, you would need to carry that to its logical conclusion (perhaps absent dad issues? High IQ? Desire or no desire to follow in their footsteps, ect) and that would affect numerous other aspects of a character. The point I'm trying to make here is you have nearly infinite capacity for crativity here, or in any form of text-based story. Your mind and a few arbitrary rules are your only limits to what you can do. If you want something, think about what situation would make sense for the character to have whatever it is, then design your character around that concept, keeping everything logical. Then worry about balancing them.
