Patriotism, isn't inherently wrong or right. But you can be happy in the country you were born in and unlike being happy with things that you literally can't control/have no actual value. There is value in appreciating what you have, and what others may have sacrificed for you in the background.

You can go overboard, it can look cheesy, it can even become propaganda. America Patriotism (the only wrong kind for most folks.) is also overly criticized and probably has been at least equally lambasted by everyone, including (and maybe especially other Amuricans. *spelled wrong on purpose*) 

I certainly find it more appropriate than the other examples I can think of.
