Throughout her early childhood, Mackenzie and her sister Melissa were as different as could be despite being identical twins. While Lissy was calm and quiet, Kenzie's brash, boisterous personality showed from a young age, to the point that people would make good and evil twin jokes. Even with all their differences, they'd often play together, inseparable friends as well as siblings.

The first major mistake of Kenzie's life was by far the worst. It was a beautiful summer's day, a perfect one for children to play outside, and the daring young tomboy challenged her sister to climb the tallest tree in the garden. Both competed to climb higher and higher, until a branch in Lissy's grip snapped. The girl's cry sounded through the air, coming to an abrupt stop. Horrified, Mackenzie clambered down, desperately trying to wake the still figure at the bottom of the tree. Melissa didn't get up. She never would.

Between her grief and guilt at losing her sister, the way her parents blamed her for what happened, and the odd things she'd started seeing and hearing since the incident, Kenzie went off at the deep end growing up. She fell in with the wrong crowds. She stayed out at drunken teen parties. She dated guys who were terrible for her. She only barely completed her education. By adulthood, she'd been written off as a complete no-hoper, someone guaranteed to die without having achieved anything.

At the age of 21, she nearly did. After she passed out at a nightclub, wasted to the point that she stopped breathing, it looked like it may have been too late to save her. It wasn't, but Mackenzie woke up in the hospital a changed person. Her brush with death had taken her to a world she'd only caught glimpses of before.

The event may have come about from yet another reckless mistake instead of any heroic deed, but it was still a turning point in Mackenzie's life. Fully awakening as a medium was a chance to be useful for once. Although it wouldn't make up for everything else, joining the SEO was the only way she could help others. Given her past, people kept an eye on her at first, but she turned out to do a surprisingly good job at her only true life path.
