Overrated:
Now, I know Mirrors Edge; Catalyst is not the most acclaimed game, but I've definitely had people refer it to me with the bottom of their heart. It has it's people, and is more of a cult game if anything (same thing for the original mirror's edge). I appreciate the game's controls, mass of side quests, skill trees, and open-ended nature. But that's where the ingenuity and praise stops; I personally dislike the personality of almost all the characters, including Faith. This is a big con because most of the game focuses on such a story. Furthermore, I found the story rather Call-Of-Duty-ish, in which there's a bunch of big words and organization/weapon/special item names thrown around to make cool action scenes and "character progression". And,
the big twist at the end concerning Faith's sister is flat out unneeded. They could have done a lot more, but I feel like this game just piggybacks on the hype of it's predecessor. That's probably what it was made to do. Not the worse game, but indeed not the best. If you want a taste of mirror's edge, though, this is probably the better one out of the two. Graphics and game play were definitely upgraded. It's not an FPS that strives on story, nor shooting mechanics; it's all about skill. You're a SWAT team with a direct mission, and other than some basic training, your missions and how you execute them are dictated by you. It's a wonderful blend of military uniformity and strategic planning. You have rooms to clear out, but you almost never know who's inside. You only have a set number of men, and in higher difficulties, they die quickly. You can get mission points redacted for a lot of different mishaps. You're playing a strict SWAT simulator; it's simple and fantastic. Now, enemy and team AI is not the best in the vanilla game, but there's tons of mods out there that improve the AI's thinking and the realism of the game. It's just a really fun time. It's an older game, but it's definitely gotten better with age.
