In ancient times, before Christianity spread through Rome, Tiber Island was avoided because of the negative stories associated with it. [Hider=History]Tiberina was an island long reputed for its absolute political and strategical immunity, being a heaven of medicine and scientific advancement. Anyone sick, wounded, or desperate for a cure could make their way to the island and hope to be treated. The island is dominated by institutions devoted to health, recuperation, and the advancement of the knowledge of the human (and other species) body and its many shortcomings. Citizens of Tiberina are also expected to make a pilgrimage across the oceans to spread their knowledge and expertise. It is considered, or was, by many to be one of the brightest lights of civilization to shine in these barbarous seas.
 
Unfortunately, neutrality was a difficult exercise of balance. Trouble inevitably arose whenever an infamous pirate would come to the island seeking medical assistance. This came to a head when the pirate Calico Black came to island and decided to stay. His crew came in and took over, killing many of the leading citizens who resisted. Unfortunately for them, in doing so they provoked the wrath of the inhabitants who used their deep knowledge of disease and poisons to wage biomedical warfare against the pirates. The pirates were eradicated and with the island half in ruin, it was decided that Tiberina would relinquish its neutrality and become a willing and eager to help the World Government and the Marines. They developed a whole navy devoted to provide Marines with top of the line health equipment and treatment. Gone were the more peaceful days of Tiberina as the island, once a small spot of paradise for all those who needed to heal became more akin to a field hospital on the front line of the marine-pirate war.[/HIDER][/INDENT][/HIDER]

Their disagreement ran deep enough that they decided to move and left the island country. They eventually found their way to the South Blue, where they worked a clinic and school on a small island. The family found itself struggling, his parents' generosity and desire to help the greater good hurting their ability to sustain the family. Brinsley and his siblings, seeing very little future for themselves on the island, started to look abroad for opportunities. They settled to joined the marines, who were desperate for recruits and advertising broadly and generously. This, understandably, caused quite a rift and great chagrin to everyone in the family as the Brinsley couple didn't hold the Marines in high regards following their self-imposed exile.
 
Brinsley had grown up in a warm and stimulating family, one that was basically trained in child rearing. His childhood was one of sunlight and adventure. He grew up to be a very well-adjusted person, but his parents' decision to leave and live on a small island for the rest of their life made him feel trapped. They wanted to leave the world of war, death, and pain behind them so that they could help those who need it on a smaller scale. Brinsley wanted to feel once again a sense of adventure and wanted to help the whole world. It is with a sense of high, misguided idealism that he joined the marine's medical division. It was quite a shock to him. It wasn't the medical part that was rough – he grew up among the sick, the wounded, and the dying, but rather the living and those he was to call his comrades. Rough, rude, and at times downright vile, he found himself viciously out of his element in the marine structure. Nevertheless, Brinsley held on.
