He lacks the ability to connect emotionally with others. This has lead to him being seen as an unforgiving and heartless person..which is true. He isn't someone to just give second chances based on how sorry someone feels or how regretful they are. If they show promise of contributing more after the mistake than he "forgives them" but if they are just ordinary worthless people than he doesn't even spare them a second glance. But despite his lack of emotional connection he can perfectly fake them to achieve the desired effect..not that he should care anymore since he became king. He can just blatantly tell someone that he doesn't give a fuck then proceed to ignore them or kill them. But more often than not, unless you are fucking whores, you need to show some form of empathy to establish a connection, no matter how small it is, in order for the riding to be good. But that's all there is to him, pleasure. He does things which make him feel good. That's as far as his ambitions go. He wants something? He will take it. He thinks he will want something a few years from now? He will grab it. He doesn't want someone to have that thing? He will break it. | B A C K G R O U N D | First of all he is the bastard son of the king and one of the queen's maids. Besides his son and daughter that he had with the queen, he was about to father another child, someone who would never know the face of his father. When the maiden was to give birth, she was given permission by the queen for a week of leave. The queen didn't know the child was the king's and the king made sure it remained that way. And a boy was birthed into this world, little Jack. The maid sent him to her parents who took care of the kid until he was 10 at which time the King came to their house and took the boy to the castle to join the workers. The child still didn't know the King was his father but his mother was genuinely surprised when the King showed up one day with the child. They tried to avoid contact with the kid but both would sometimes get careless and get close to the kid, showing parenting care. The queen started to harbor doubts as she didn't believe that the child was "the kid of a close dead friend's of mine" as the king had put it. 5 more years passed and the queen was finally sure that the child was the King's by the way he interacted with him when the king thought there were no prying eyes. This fueled a raging jealousy within the queen who started to see the child as a threat. So she devised a plan to poison the child and for this he gave her most trusted maid a vial of poison, the effect of which mimicked natural causes of death, removing allegations of foul play. As it happens, her most trusted maid was Jack's mother, Mary. And when she found out that the queen wanted her to kill her own son, it came as a sock for the maid. Out of spite the maid poisoned the Queen's son instead. Zachariah perished come morning of the next light. During the following night, right after the prince's death, the maid who was charged with killing Jack was summoned by the Queen to her chambers. As soon as she entered, the doors locked behind her. The queen had her back turned to the maid and was leaning on the balcony, a dagger on hand, out of sight from the eyes of the maid. The queen had found out that Jack was her child and that she had poisoned hers instead of him. The queen spoke to the maid, telling her all the horrid and painful things she would do to her son. She was bitter and wanted nothing more than for Mary to suffer, then end her. Just as she was about to turn, the maid who had gotten close to the queen during their conversation pushed her off the balcony. The maid claimed that the queen had killer herself out of grief but the King would have none of that. He executed all of his late wife's hand maidens, blaming them for not noticing the queen's fragile state of mind and not helping her. And in the end, he imprisoned Jack. He blamed the boy for all of this thought deep down, a part of him knew this to be a lie, knew that the reason for imprisoning the boy was to lock down the feelings of guilt and betrayal that caused his heart to ache. So Jack stayed imprisoned for several years and every time the king felt bitter or was intoxicated, he came to the dungeons and roughed him up, tears in his eyes, all the while blaming the kid for what happened that night. This went on for 4 years. The king then got an illness which after thorough analyses was said to be incurable, giving him a couple more years. The king was still grieving the death of his wife and as so he couldn't bare* to bare another child with another woman but he still needed a son to pass the throne to. As the situation was looking hopeless, he remembered of the son he had in the dungeon. He was his son after all. And so one day he came with open arms to his son, finally embracing him as his kin claiming that he would rule the throne one day. The king didn't only do this out of necessity, once he looked past the grief he found sorrow within himself, regret for having treated his flesh and blood like that. But the time in the dungeon and the fact that this king who proclaimed to be his father had killed his mother, coupled with the beatings had transformed the boy. TO begin with, he was just blank. It might've been the solitude, leaving him for weeks on end without any company or light..It could also have been the constant beatings, though the solitude was so haunting that the boy looked past the physical pain and enjoyed the presence and sight of another human. When the King came with the news, he felt nothing, not even hate for the man, he was just human after all. And so, a broken kid who had the emotions squeezed out of him began the long journey to ruling a country. 11 more years passed, 11 more years in training for his role as the future king of Slibah and the king's condition was only worsening. It was a miracle that he had lived this long, surpassing all expectations. The boy was now a man, 30 years of age and still waiting for his rightful throne. A crisis had emerged which could bring them to the brink of war. A crisis that was easily solvable, give Julianna, the princess, over to the kingdom of Abhain. This proposal was sure to calm the bloods but the king was dead set on not giving his daughter away. He had lost enough family and he had learned his mistake from mistreating his kin. He didn't want to force this upon his daughter, he wanted to let her have the life she wanted. Jack on the other end found this decision of the king unwise. They had gone and talked for peace treaties, the other side had requested the hand of the princess for marriage and the king would let all of that burn? For what? So that his daughter could be happy? Jack decided that he had endured enough of this foolish, feeble man. He took the peace treaty and slipped it with other common problems and projects that needed the king's signature to be approved. Unknowingly the king had signed his daughter away. When Julianna came to confront her father about this, he was genuinely shocked and summoned Jack at once. The prince, not being present, came at a later time, when no one was around. When the king's guard's shift ended, he put his own guards on the door. They let him entry to the king's chambers where he finally confronted his father. After a heated argument about right and wrong, about betrayal and mistreatment, Jack had had enough, took the pillow and suffocated the king. One thing surprised him at that moment, he felt nothing for that man, not even anger, no sadness, only clarity. He got out of the chambers and ordered the guards to tell no one that he was there. The next morning he could hear the cries of his sister on his late father's chambers. With the king announced dead, he was the new king at last. The years to come were straining for the people of the kingdom. Jack invested heavily in the mining and ship building, decreeing that every man aged 30-60 would be sent to the mines. Because of this his economy bloomed as the trading with the countries over seas was flourishing. This wasn't slave labor, more like forced work. He assured them that their families would be payed and in case of their death they would be compensated generously. He also focused on building his army and upgrading his weapons, armors and battle armaments. For boys aged 8-21, the army awaited them. He even started to buy slave kids. Jack had devised the new training regiment himself. For young adults the training would be harsh focused in patriotism, fighting for their country. For the younger kids he would engrave loyalty into their very bone. They would be his hands and do his bidding behind the public eyes. They were trained to obey only him. How were they trained? They were split into teams of 2 during all their training, learning to count on their partner to survive it and those who did had to pass one final test, kill their partner. The graduation test. This assured their loyalty to the king.
