They have long been an ambitious house always seeking out opportunities to strengthen themselves. During the Dance of the Dragons they supported the Greens with hopes of being rewarded for supporting Aegon II. Though like most rich houses House Reyne also frequently hires mercenaries to augment their forces, so the amount of men they have on call fluctuates. Robert, while seeing a chance to advance the house and possibly to replace the Lannisters as the Wardens in the West, knew that should the Blackfyres lose House Reyne would be punished for supporting the rebels. So he struck an accord with his brother saying that Robb could go out and support the Blackfyres, but that should they lose he would be disowned and the family would distance itself away from him. And so with the plan known only to the two of them Robb left, and when the Blackfyres lost he was disowned and fled with the Blackfyres to Tyrosh. During the aftermath House Reyne was able to avoid most repercussions due to their quick disowning and condemnation of Robb Reyne, declaring that he acted on his own and with no support from House Reyne. During the Spring sickness House Reyne itself was able avoid most of the sickness by hiding in their subterranean castle, though their lands were hit by the sickness. With the country weakened by sickness and with whispers of a possible return of the Blackfyres, Robert sees a chance to advance once more. [ ⚔ ] P O V s
