I like it. You could have various "magic modes." Shielding could make your body more durable to damage but lacks speed as a result while another spell grants you more speed at the cost of strength. 

Projectiles are acceptable along with a close combat spell, maybe a magical sword or axe or something? 

It's up to you if want to make your character solely long ranged.
