I think the power source of magic in a high - fantasy setting is sort of what sets the boundaries of what is possible and what is not and I usually judge an RP or a book by the way magic is treated. I agree that the D&D standard of scholarly magic is a bit underwhelming-I don't have any ideas at the moment but I am looking forward to keeping up with this.
