Super interested in this, it looks awesome and right up my alley. My only questions are just on some background info to help determine how I spin out my character and understand the rest of the world. I'm a sucker for lore, so feel free to lay it on me.
Hi Sypher, thanks for the interest I'd be happy to answers your questions. I forgot to mention the current year is 2040 :)
What's the tech level like? You mentioned Exo-suits, but also cannons. I get that things would have degraded over the last 15 or so years, but rusty exo-suits give a different flavor to things than rusty cannons.
The tech level is slightly futuristic, but that's not something you'll see until later on (plasma caster?). There are exo-suits, but the only sighting of them have been in the neighboring state of New Jersey. There were corporations who were working on similar designs before the fog rolled out, who knows if they are still around. The war ships, to the ship-o-phile would seem foreign for sure. Medicine is slightly advanced, but again this is available to the tech wealthy or rich city-states. One of the greatest medical achievements would be vitalife. Each syringe increases your regeneration of cells at the cost of your age (you'll age a few months or a year depending on how bad the injury is.) Most, unmaintained weapons, structures etc have been rusted and destroyed pretty much. Some old world tech hangs about, to those who maintain it.
Is Philly (really) a democracy?
:)
What's the power structure like?
The president, his council, and Congress, the courts, the army (who maintain police services). The army has a strong presence in everything but so far, it seems like the president is controlled from a glance. Behind the scenes, no one really knows. The government is very much in control, of course if Philly is a police state it's very subtle. People haven't been pulled out of their houses and shot since the regular army was in control, until they were driven out by the guardsmen. So the story goes.
What's society like after surviving such a brutal catastrophe?
Everyone works, anyone 'unemployed' is put to work somehow and everyone earns their food and a little extra (philly money). A lot of people are happy living in the walled off city, in a sense some things are back to normal. Some want to leave, and have, they want to see what the world is on the outside. The Government doesn't want to lose people to the fog, bandits, other cities so foot travel outside is rather restrictive. No one is a fan of the fog, expect the cultists (I'll touch on in OOC and later on~). Alot of people are resentful to the fog, there still is fog in the city. Very very lightly, the city employs technology to ward the heavy stuff off (A mile circle around the city and inside is less dense than outside). This keeps most creatures away. A lot of people inside have a lot to lose if the city were taken, everyone is on edge and rightfully so outsiders are banned. They can't be trusted. There are still the rich, poor, middle class etc. It's hard to work out of poverty though, those who aren't poor definetly do side work outside their assigned job.
What's the art scene like? Are camera's still a thing?
Those powered by electricity/batteries are expensive since power is expensive. That being said most people live without power and have found ways to game the system or live without. Mostly, the art that is around is a sculpture of scrap and paintings. However, these artists while small do this own their own time. They have a job to do, this is just side work. As President Tolliver says. "Work comes first, culture comes second."
What does the medical field look like?
In philly, most medicine is basic pre-fog stuff. There are people who are 'shamans' but they aren't seen much in the city and are seen in less, democratic and more free states. There is some advanced medicine but it's usually saved for the army hospital or the corporate owned one. There are three hospitals in Philly. Philidelphia General - for all the civs, basic stuff and treatment. Either it's full of patients or empty, depends on what's going on. Hellcat Army Hospital - named after the infamous 'Hellcat' unit that is employed by the Guardsmen, the hospital is exclusive to the members of military and government. Expect better treatment here. Agency Corp R&D - owned by a pre-world mega corp, this medical lab is closed to the public. Very few people come inside, and leave.
How many thunderdomes are in New Jersey?
One in the Monarchy of Julia (formerly Trenton NJ). Hope this helped :)
