Can you find an image/picture that would fit your character? I prefer having a visual component to solidify a character's features so that everyone has a clear idea of how they look like. I get that it might irk you but I don't think an image you find would necessarily conflict with another person's vision of that specific piece of art (unless you take something from the first page of a google image search and I see the same "cool edgy anime man" that I've seen a dozen times)

It's less about conflicting with somebody else's vision of the piece, and more about not wanting to steal somebody's work. Also if I use an image of an actual character from media, that could color both characters in my mind in a way I'd like to avoid. Regardless, I'm working on a solution, we'll see how (or if) it turns out.
