Liv & Vitus

Abomination, Soul Thief

General Description

Race
Half Dragon (Zmey heritage)
Age
142 (Liv) / 34 (Vitus)
Size
5'3" ; 228 lbs
Gender
Female sex Female (Liv) / Male (Vitus)
Sexuality
"What the fuck is that?" (Liv) "Whatever floats your goat, honey." (Vitus)
Religion
Surneth (Liv) One of two sects of (arguably) the same religion, though one would probably argue that it was a cult. Followers of Surneth (the Surt) believe in the creation myth of Surt and Ellim and consider themselves as descendents of Surt, their creating goddess. As opposed to directing worship to Surt, they place a high level of devotion into the tenets and expectations in the belief that their lives are used to strengthen the next generation of Surt. The customs are long-winded at best, but largely revolve around the concepts of duty, balance, and strength. The Surt are largely seen as savages because of the way they tend to be raised--most do not live a full life when they follow the customs religiously. The Surt do not get along with the Ellim despite being part of the same religion. Liv follows the customs of the Surt, but not as zealously as most others in her religion. However, she is defensive about her beliefs and will react violently if they are insulted too gravely. Her beliefs are part of the reason why she utilizes her magic and picks fights the way that she does. For whatever reason, Liv doesn't possess or go by a Surt name--an anomaly in the religion. Undecided (Vitus) While Vitus had been well acquainted with numerous different religions and followers, he never decided upon a religion for himself to follow. Having physically destroyed the souls of innocent people before they could make it to the afterlife, he grew a bit cynical in his search for a god. Whatever sort of after-life retribution he ends up standing before, he's not really interested in choosing a specific one.
Job
Battlemage - As a battlemage, Liv and Vitus are expected to use their magical capabilities in direct combat alongside a team of other fighters.
Personality

Hot-blooded and vulgar--those should be the first things that anyone notices about Liv because that's what she broadcasts. As a Surt, she holds a moderate obsession with growing stronger, and doesn't hesitate to throw herself into dangerous situations in pursuit of power. Though impulsive and young (for her species), Liv is sharper than she seems...in pretty much all aspects. Sharp witted, sharp tongued, and generally carrying something sharp. While she lacks the cool and calculated approach that Vitus possesses, Liv's ability to fly by the seat of her pants speaks volumes about either her experience or her apparent resourcefulness. Emotionally, Liv is somewhat stunted thanks to her upbringing. She's getting better, but her immediate and most relevant emotions at any and all times are fear, anger, and pretty much nothing else. Vitus has long grown 'accustomed' to his position, but has not become any more complacent about it. He's very sarcastic, often openly antagonistic towards Liv, but tends to do so more to annoy her than to actually start any sort of open rivalry between the two. The calm and collected yin to Liv's feral yang, it's apparent when he's taken over. Everything is slower with Vitus in control; planned and calculated.

Biography

Vitus was an average, if ambitious, young adult before his whole life went to shit. His childhood in a small village was nothign short of uninteresting, save for the fact that the village was on the outskirts of one of the larger magical cities. With so many travellers passing by, each with their own unique magical abilities, Vitus found himself marvelling at the practice. An open interest in the arcane arts had led him to study numerous different forms of spellcasting - although every time he attempted to learn, he was stopped by the same obstacle. He had no interest in allowing magic to flow through him as he had been told many times; he wanted control of the art - the ability to shape and execute it as he pleased, not the rules and scriptures that seemed required wherever he went. It was through his attempts to find a school of magic that would allow control rather than coordination that he encountered something so few people had been willing to talk about: the ability to use the spirits of the recently deceased as an arcane power source; ready for manipulation in the form that he desired. Through a few years of self-study, the personal collection of more than a few sprits, and the ambition that had driven him down this path, he quickly excelled in his field. Far and away from the struggles of a human, Liv had been dutifully following the expectations laid out before her. Like all Surt, Liv was born with every expectation of magic being part of her life. There was never a question about the capacity, only the depth of her ability and the way that she wanted to forge it. Just like countless Surt before her, she was taught how to rebuff most of her emotions. Taught only to understand a few bare concepts in the safety of their sect and accept that she had a duty that took precedence over her own life, Liv had the makings to become one of the ascended based solely on her magic. But first, she had to prove herself. When she left her home, Liv's intention was to grow strong enough to fulfill her designation and return a fully fledged ascended or to die trying. The draconic child did exactly as she was told--she grew stronger, did anything it took to get stronger...and eventually heard whispers of someone whose magic was close to her own. Close, but wrong. As Liv hunted information, the more convinced she became. This person was a problem for her future growth. But also a perfect opportunity to get that much stronger. And so, she hunted Vitus like prey, and when she found him, they fought in what could only be called a duel to the death. It was during this duel that Liv and Vitus would find themselves forever locked together. While neither could gain the upper hand, they were still getting blows in, and it was a fairly even match up until the end. By some trick of fate, they both managed to land a killing blow against the other, causing an interesting conundrum. Liv's magic had caused her to absorb Vitus's soul, while Vitus's magic had caused him to capture Liv's soul. In essence, Vitus collected Liv's spirit, and they were both absorbed into the now empty body of Liv. Vitus's body was completely killed, while Liv's got to continue on, forever changed. With two souls in a technically dead body, a loophole was formed. They became inexorably linked together - one of them puppeting the corpse they were both inhabiting, while the other got to sit in the background and shout profanities, with zero control over the body they shared. However, with two equally powerful souls, it was found that control over the body would continously switch between the two, although neither of them could control for predict when a shift of spirit dominance would happen. They've been living like this ever since; a forced cooperation between two rivals eventually blooming into a reluctant acceptance. It was shortly after this reluctant acceptance that something else fell across their laps; an artifact of Surneth nature apparently being kept in possession of Sir Lancelot. Both had heard of The Dark Knight, albeit mostly through fairy tales and legends; and it wasn't a hard endeavor to convince either of them to seek him out. Liv hunted for the artifact in the same way she hunted for Vitus, and Vitus relished the chance to expand his power and control to even greater bounds.

At a grand height of 5'2 and sporting a face that looks more doll than dragon, it's hard for most people to take Liv seriously--moreso now that she can't grow anymore. Due to the slow aging process of her race as a whole, Liv appears to be in her early teens at best, and though she possesses draconic features like the golden horns adorning her head and framing her face and a tail that ends with a sharp spade-like protrution, she barely looks like she's fit to be on the battlefield like she demands to be. She does not possess the ability to hide her draconic features due to her diluted lineage. One will rarely, if ever, see Liv outside of easy to move in clothing--assuming you can convince her to get out of armor for longer than it takes to bathe and sleep.

Traits and Equipment

A half dragon is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin--a being born with a dragon parent. In Liv's case, her father was a zmey dragon, capable of taking human form and seducing humans on a whim--an ability that did not pass down to Liv. Half dragons of Liv's heritage (half zmey, half human) vary between individuals--some come out significantly more dragon-like than others. For easier consideration, we'll focus on the race qualities solely for Liv's situation. In Liv's case, she inherited a slower aging rate, courtesy of her father, along with horns, a tail, and tougher than average skin (not enough to deflect serious attacks, but mishaps in cooking aren't of much concern). Additionally, she did not inherit significantly sharper senses compared to a human, only a somewhat higher instinctive acknowledgement of danger. She originally was born with far more scales and natural protection, but had them taken away in a ritual prior to leaving her homelands. Her abnormally high strength was not, in fact, an inherited trait from her dragon blood, though many half dragons of Liv's type do have high physical strength. What she did inherit was very potent magic, likely in no small part from her mother's own lineage.

Curse - Soul Dominance: Liv and Vitus have a unique conundrum: being two souls trying to puppet a corpse together. While cooperation would certianly be the easiest route to achieve their goals, they are instead doomed to forever rely on chance to allow them any control. The body they both inhabit is piloted by whoever the dominant soul is at the time; a circumstance that changes rapidly and without warning. While not the dominant soul, the other is left to silently scream inside both their heads - they can communicate, but the non-dominant soul has zero control over their body. The sudden change of personality (and by exstension, abilities) is nothing if not inconvienent. Boon - Substitution: As part of Surt customs, prior to being sent off on her duties, Liv's mentor performed a ritual using very traditional Surt magic. In return for most of Liv's natural scales (and natural protection), her mentor gave her his physical strength. It is for this reason that Liv is able to swing weapons of great size without much concern to the weight. Being that her mentor is probably dead (Liv isn't certain--she hasn't made a point to return), she doubts she can reverse the trade.

Pull (Liv)
The first step to Liv's power usage in any and all forms. Without the aid of her artifact, Liv can naturally hold up to six souls with her for ease of access. In order to remove a soul from its vessel, she must approach something that is dying or very recently deceased and effectively pull the soul from it, absorbing it herself. She can theoretically pull the soul from any living thing, but tends to lean towards sentient forms as they are typically much higher quality. Liv is unable to remove the souls of those that are not close to death or recently dead.

Soul Forge (Liv)
Liv's primary use of her magic is via reforging a soul into a more tangible, useful shape. The first time that Liv does this with a soul, it can take hours to reforge the shape, but afterwards, recreating the shape looks more like a quick summoning through smoky crimson and black tendrils. All souls are capable of taking on the form of a weapon, some larger, some smaller, and some inclined toward elemental properties. Liv can't control what form the soul will take, only that it will take one when worked under her magic.

Cottonmaid's Flight (Liv)
By absorbing energy from a dying soul--e.g. leftovers from Vitus's abilities or by breaking one of her own weapons--Liv receives a temporary boost in her physical capabilities--most notably, in how quickly she is able to move. Liv isn't entirely capable of consciously activating this spell, and tends to do it when she feels the energy present. When it is in effect, the air seems to distort slightly around her. Because Liv isn't consciously activating the spell, the effects are generally limited to less than a minute based on how much energy is absorbed.

SoulMend (Vitus)
Vitus's main method of keeping their body intact - SoulMend allows him to transfer the life energy found within a spirit into his own body. Such a transfer primarily is used for mending skin shut and reattaching body parts, although it is also the method by which Vitus has kept their body from rotting despite its age. With enough soul energy, Vitus can keep their body from falling apart, maintain the appearance of life, and has even succeeded in forcing a few heartbeats from an otherwise dead organ. Currently, SoulMend is a personal spell - capable of healing Vitus and Liv only.

SoulFire (Vitus)
By forcing a spirit to expend a great deal of energy at once, Vitus can conjure a light blue flame in his hands. This flame is harmful to others, but not to himself. With some concentration, Vitus can control the flame at will, affecting the spread, movement, and even color of the fire. Without concentration, the fire remains at rest and spreads in the same fashion as a normal fire. Without a fuel source, the flame typically only lasts for a minute before flickering out. While Vitus can control the flames even after they spread, it requires more concentration the larger the inferno gets.

Spark of Life (Vitus)
By choosing a target, Vitus can instantaneously use up all the energy in a soul, causing a bolt of electricity to arc between himself and whatever he has targeted. Currently, the force of the lightning bolt is only mild - enough to harm but not kill; although stronger souls allow him to expend more energy and create a more powerful bolt. Vitus must use the entirety of a soul to cast this spell, and cannot control the strength of the bolt.

SoulBlight (Vitus)
Vitus's most recently obtained spell; he has only learned how to reliably cast it after his duel with Liv. By attempting to befoul the soul within a living creature, Vitus can cause debilitating effects on the target creature. Currently, however, this spell only causes mild fatigue and naseua.

Soul Bound
Due to the nature of their duel and attempts at mastering soul magic, Liv and Vitus have found themselves spiritually attached to the same body. While their individual souls could theoretically be removed by a powerful enough force, the nature of their bond means that both souls are naturally inclined to return to their vessel if left to their own devices, rather than passing on to whatever afterlife they are destined for. Similarly, because of their bond and experience, neither has to worry about accidentally using the other's soul in their preferred method of practice.

Undead Resiliancy
While Liv and Vitus do have a body they share, they are technically undead, piloting a well preserved dead body around like a puppet. Things that would normally be detrimental to living creatures (poison, disease, fatigue, etc.) have no affect on their vessel, and even grevious wounds will not put the duo completely out of commission; major wounds can simply be sewn up or healed (see Vitus's magic section) as long as there is enough of a body to manipulate.

Fire Resistance
As a half dragon, Liv's body is slightly resistant to fire. She can tolerate standard flames and significant heat, but anything more than that will start to damage her body. As Vitus shares the body with Liv, he naturally possesses this resistance as well.

Combat Experience Liv)
As a Surt, Liv's entire life has been about combat and strength. That said, of her 142 years, Liv has spent the vast majority of it picking fights, getting into fights, and trying to win those fights. She understands and cares to understand very little beyond combat and her assigned duties as a Surt, so suffice to say...she is very experienced in matters of combat.

Weapons Training (Liv)
Due to the nature of her magic and her young age (relative to her species), Liv has a knack for using weapons. Though far from formally trained in any form of weaponry, Liv is able to work a variety of two-handed swords and battleaxes into her hectic combat style. She struggles with using one-handed weaponry and doesn't carry ammunition for ranged weaponry (and finds it distasteful).

Personal Focus (Vitus)
Many years of controlling and altering souls has allowed for Vitus to use his own body as a focus for casting, negating the need for a wand or staff. As long as he can move his hands, he can cast spells - limiting his movement in any way will cause the spells to be weaker, or negate his ability to cast them altogether.

Area of Expertise
Liv and Vitus both possess and practice different variations of the same method of soul magic. However, the way they utilize souls is unique to their study and abilities - a slight issue arises when one of them tries to preform with the other one's skillset. Vitus lacks the strength and speed required to utilize Liv's summoned weapons, leaving him a clunky, stumbling mess. On the flip side, Liv lacks the focus and fine manipulation for Vitus's soulcasting, which can lead to catastrophic results if she takes over mid-spell.

Dragon Heritage
Being that the body shared by Liv and Vitus is part dragon, most things detrimental to a dragon are also detrimental to Liv and Vitus physically. Things like frigid temperature, dragon's bane, and a more feral method of thought (mostly limited to Liv) can, and generally will have an effect on the duo of souls, though not necessarily to the extent of a full blooded dragon.

Time Limit (Liv)
Liv's ability to forge a soul into a weapon, though reusable, acts within a time limit. Souls of higher quality will generally last longer than lower quality souls. Once the time limit is up, her weapon disperses like a wisp of light and she needs to conjure a new one. There is a slight cooldown between using the same soul to reforge the same weapon.

Soul Resilience (Liv)
Changing the form of a soul is very, very taxing on the soul itself. Overutilization of a soul without allowing time for it to recover can cause the soul to destroy itself from the strain. That means the weapon is gone forever. Higher quality souls will generally last for about 5-7 reuses within three days before completely destroying themselves. It takes approximately three days for the soul to recover to full strength.

Single Form (Liv)
A soul doesn't change when it becomes part of Liv's collection...primarily because it can't. That means when she reforges the soul for the first time, that's the form that it gets stuck in. A sword will always be a sword, an axe will always be an axe. Liv, though skilled in many forms of weapon-based combat, is not able to fight with every type of weapon. That said, there are also naturally stronger weapons and weaker weapons based on the quality of the soul. Some souls have a predisposition towards the elements too, which can lead to unexpected effects in combat.

Accessibility (Liv)
Though the artifact can hold an abundance of souls, it is not entirely convenient to search through the ones gathered in the heat of combat. At any given moment, Liv can hold up to six souls with her. Of these, only three are generally accessible in the heat of battle. Only one soul can be reforged into a weapon at a time. It takes about two minutes for Liv to swap the three easily accessible souls for others currently being carried by her, but it takes anywhere from one to four hours to swap out any of the souls for one carried through other means.

Soul Charge (Vitus)
Vitus utilizes his magic by drawing the spiritual power from a captured soul and manipulating it to serve his needs. A soul only has so much power in it before it simply fades into nonexistance, and there is no way for Vitus to add energy to a soul, only deplete it. A typical soul only has enough energy for two or three spells, with variations between souls. There is no saving a previously used soul for later; once Vitus has drawn power from a soul, it will continue to leak energy until completely dissipated, much like the dying flame of a candle. While a soul leaks energy, it leaves behind a trail; easily detectable by those with the methods or even cursory knowlege of spirits

Zmey Wing Armor
Not exactly the most practical...for a human. For a half dragon whose entire purpose in life is to fight and fight well? It's suitable. Made largely out of her father's right wing (he's fine other than that, don't worry), Liv's armor is lightweight, flexible, and moderately durable, if absurdly difficult (read: impossible) to repair properly. It's essentially thin, light scale armor with some leathery bits. The majority of it has been damaged or broken before.

Sword Hilt Dagger
It is literally a dagger that Vitus demanded Liv to have "just in case". It is not magical. It is a dagger. It does not possess magical qualities. It is a dagger.

Heart of Surt

Embedded into Liv's chest, over (and, if she's to believed, pretty much touching) her heart--ironic, considering she believes it to be a long-missing piece of Surt's own heart. According to the creation myths of the Surt, their goddess had her heart run through and stolen from inside her as a result of betrayal from her brother (effectively her twin), Ellim. Most of it was lost, and the small fragment that returned was corrupted beyond repair without the remainder. Because the Heart of Surt is only a fraction of the whole, the power it possesses is...lacking, compared to a goddess. It still possesses its ability to guide and redirect spirits and souls, and can even contain them to be carried, but according to legend, the Heart of Surt was what gave her the power to be a goddess--many Surt believe that the most powerful of their kin are born with one of the missing pieces to help amplify their powers. While the artifact can actively (and weakly) boost Liv and Vitus's abilities in a pinch, it's a far cry from the "overflowing magic" that the completed heart was capable of. Needless to say, Liv and Vitus do not use the heart as it is meant to be used.

Relationships
Par'Sath Eth'Erax: As a thief of souls, both Vitus and Liv are slightly intimidated by the legendary Guide of the Apostles. Not intimidated enough to stop stealing the souls he continously shows up to guide, but certainly intimidated enough to give him a wide berth and make a hasty escape whenever he is in the area. The sinister omens the Apostle spouts are no trifling matter, although they have done little to stop the theiving duo.
Other
Liv's mother was the Surt, not that Liv spent much time with her due to Surt customs. Liv was indeed the one that cut her father's right wing off to create armor for herself--it was not her idea. It was his.
