Here he served as Operations Officer during building and manning of the ship, initial Sea Qualifications and subsequent deployment work-ups for Counter Drug Operations. Commander Grimes then reported to the staff of COMMANDER DESTROYER SQUADRON TWENTY-ONE as Operations/Plans Officer, completing a 3rd/7th Fleet Deployment aboard USS JOHN C STENNIS (CVN-74) in support of Operation Northern Edge, RIMPAC 2004, JASEX, and various multi National Exercises.
