Pam's explanation is to play the girl card and the fact she's only carrying a bow and has to get a lot closer to hit her target. Watch her shoot sometime and you'll see she's mediocre at best with it and in a dangerous situation useless...she's a girl as in helpless damsel who knows she has to play the cards dealt her.

Her heart is hard because otherwise she couldn't live with the things she feels she needs to do to survive. I'd be as mercenary because the state we are in is primitive and the quickest to adapt get to survive and that's what I'm playing her as in the intro; I can't keep the sneaky bitch up long as it's counter to my true nature.
