This library expanded as he gathered all there was to gather, all there was within his reach to learn. The years began to drag on, many came and went to the library and rumors spread throughout the land of the wizard who had known all, Astioth. Many set out to seek his aid in political struggles, medical emergencies, protection from those that would seek to harm them, but most importantly those who sought to master the unseen. Mages from across the world, untrained and knowing only the most basic things about the energy they manipulated came to him for training, many he turned down and for years he taught nobody. As his reputation grew, and the tower became a more frequented place a town grew to inhabit the base of the tower stretching to the nearby coast that the tower oversaw. The town grew massive, gaining it's own reputation as a bustling port trade town where only the freshest fish and the most marvelous products can be obtained. Things stayed like this for hundreds of years, the wizard standing as a guardian of the city through the ages causing may to whisper that he had mastered even life itself, found the secrets of immortality to keep himself alive for all time. But one day something changed in the elder wizard's life. Cowering in a corner of his library he discovered a small half elf girl dressed in rags, clenching a half eaten loaf of bread. He questioned the girl and discovered she was a runaway slave, seeking shelter in the one place nobody dared to chase her. He noticed something in her, a spark of talent in something she herself couldn't explain. This girl became the first student to learn under the famed wizard, and within the next 50 years of her arrival the library became known as the Grand Arcanium, a school to teach those talented enough to wield that which they don't understand the arts of magic and sorcery under the tutelage of the most fearsome wizard to ever stand in the land. Two hundred years have past since those days, the school is now a thriving success filled with it's own teachers, masters of their schools and dedicated to the prominence of the Arcanium's knowledge. Students wander the halls, numbering a few hundred in total. (Rather large for the time mind you) A new semester is approaching, and the school is accepting new students to try and master the arcane. With a chime from the town clock tower, and the bustling of business in the town below, we find ourselves just a few days away from the new student's orientation day. What adventure does this new year hold in the mysterious tower of the Arcanium? No particularly strong magical preferences, no special histories to cover. Just your standard human. There are a bunch of human cultures in my lore that reflect real world cultures, but we're hand waving that.
High Elves (Who's ready for the my elf is better than your elf contests, woooo...)
High elves are the original elves with strong magical proficiency in holy and healing magic. They are very wise, generally patient, and the most versatile elves in terms of appearance. Their skin are just as variant as humans are, albeit always pale versions of whatever skin tone they happen to be, and they usually have lighter hair colors, but never silver. They wear light yellow robes typically, and often have golden fabrics and threads in their clothes. Beautiful and elegant to a fault, these elves are truly kind and wise but hate dark elves with a passion if raised in their native land. This is due to deep rooted lore history, available upon request but considered forgotten by time. They went on to become the progenitors of all elves in the realm, which gained them the racial name High Elf. Pointed ears come standard with every sign up.
Dwarves
Dwarves are short proud folk, often considered to be the kindest people in the world. Their culture is centered in brotherly bonds forged in the battles of their history. They hail from two separate dwarven cultures, the Dwarves of the Wooden Hills, and the Dwarves of the Rolling Fields. Both have a brotherly appreciation for one another, but have one argument that even they will go to war over: Who makes the better ale? Dwarves are typically red haired with hairy bodies when male, and both men and women are considered to be plumper than most people. Built sturdy and strong, they are not the greatest mages but there are few that have been known to have the talent of enchanting. Their disconnection to the voice of nature makes it impossible to be a druidic mage in any regard, but they have been known to become great animal tamers without the use of it anyhow. Dwarves are known as the most unparalleled minds in regards to innovation and engineering. None can match their creativity when inspiration strikes them.
Wood Elves
Wood Elves are just as the name implies, elves that have taken a preference to the woods. They are generally reclusive, and wear very little to cover themselves some with robes, some with leafy clothes. They prefer the art of the bow to the art of mage-craft. Though they have one form of magic unique to only them, druidism. Using nature magic, they can speak to the trees and animals, and they practice a belief in a woman they refer to as The Green Mother. Their appearance is typically a tan or light skin tone, occasionally covered in head to toe with green tattoo like markings that they are born with. Many attribute this to their connection to the Sacred Pools of Heria. A magical pool said to have given them their connection to nature and their longevity in the first place. They typically have blonde, brown, or red hair.
Dark Elves (Recommended for more advanced rp'rs due to complicated cultural notes. This is the hard one... But there are a lot of perks too!)
(FOUND A PERFECT PICTURE YES these physical traits are hard to find a picture for I feel proud) (Yes I know who she is, she fits the general description this is hard to define in a picture :P so sue me.) Now here's the thing, dark elves and drow ARE different in my lore. Dark Elves have a blood purity aspect to them, and so a lot goes into their personal descriptions. At 70% blood purity, a dark elf is considered to be dark elf rather than drow. Anything below 70% is considered drow in the eyes of dark elves, who have a sense of racial superiority ingrained in them from their culture. There is a lore reason for why they're like this, but yes that does in fact make them kinda messed up. AKA, they're generally dicks. Keep that in mind when choosing to be one, you don't have to be evil but you definitely think you're better than everyone else. On a brighter note, they are very very proficient in all fields of magic other than enchanting, good aura'd magic, and illusions. They have a tendency to lean on conjuration, destruction, and evil aura'd magic. They have a particularly notable control over Ice based magic specifically. Their skin is black or grey regardless of blood purity. Those raised by non-dark elves usually don't have such extreme views, but still have to deal with the negative attitude of the world views dark elves with since they have such a high prejudice to non-dark elves. Dark Elves are typically always beautiful, but have a wicked aura around them. This all has lore explanations, but I won't go into it here. Feel free to ask about it, but I warn you that you would have to be cautious of metagaming if you do, and metagaming WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. This is some heavy knowledge about the origins of the world, not even studying at the library would give you direct answers. So do ask with caution! Visual changes - *70%: You will have deep scarlet eyes, signifying your status as a dark elf rather than a drow. Your hair will be either pure silver white, black, or occasionally platinum blonde. *80%: Your skin will become paler, still grey but with odd markings adorning your skin. Be they symbols on specific areas such as your chest, stomach, and back, or simply tattoo like markings on your face. If you choose symbols or runes, nobody has any idea what they say, so be sure you make sure you know that. These markings can be scarlet, icy blue, or a royal purple. *90%: You will have sharp fangs where your canines should be, your fingernails will grow 3x as fast forming claw like points if not maintained, and your hair will have a blueish tint as it descends further down. *95%: your eyes will have a sharp blue or a deep purple color instead of the standard scarlet *100%: When Adolescence hits, you will undergo a painful period where a thick horn(s) will grow from your forehead with a white shade of ivory. This signifies your true pure blood status, and you will receive special treatment from all dark elves that recognize your status. Often doing as you command with loyalty. In this blood percentage, it is said your beauty is unparalleled even among all elves. These elves are often gifted jewelry and gorgeous robes from secret admirers, and wear crown like headbands over their forehead to decorate and compliment their horn(s). All dark elves native to their homeland abide by the strict social classes that these blood percentages represent, with 100% being considered the equivalent of royalty answering to only one person higher than them... But that is a tale for another time... As you go up your blood percentage you will have traits from all others below that percentage.
The Drow
The Drow are an offshoot of Dark Elf, seperated by hundreds of years of development in terms of evolution. They were banished to the Forest Of Lies, a treacherous place where fumes trigger psychosis in the feeble minded, forcing them to see hallucinations of things they perceive able to harm them. The exposure to this resulted them to have a strong resistance to mind magic and illusions. Their time in the Forest, being swampy in nature, resulted in them learning to control disease magic with great proficiency and as a result a higher understanding of healing magic. Unlike their Dark Elf cousins, the drow are far more accepting and have less defined characteristics that signal they are drow in origin. Their skin is more light grey and sometimes even blue in tone, with pale pink eyes instead of the deep scarlet that would signal a dark elf status. The drow are resentful of dark elves due to a long history of standing against them in conflicts through the ages, and find their cultural practices cruel and despicable. As a result of this hatred, they often do not care that they are viewed with the same prejudice from less educated civilians of the world as long as they aren't associated with them directly. Many people are aware that they are separate cultures entirely, but have a hard time distinguishing them from each other since they aren't sure what to look for. Drow are excellent duelists, and quick to pick up on things they don't know due to a long historical culture of learn or die situations. The differences may be subtle, but are very important from a lore standpoint.
Half Elves
Ok so half elves are kinda weird. They have no solid cultures or any particular advantages or disadvantages. They're basically any race that has some traits of any kind of elf or another. The only thing I'll say you can't do is half drak elf, cause that'd be incorrect, you'd be half drow. Whole... Blood thing....
Gnomes
They may be small but they sure are capable! Gnomes are short small framed creatures generally humanoid in appearance. They are exceptionally light on their feet, and combined with their small builds this makes them very hard to hit targets. Gnomes are known for being exceptionally good tinkerers, and have even made strides past the dwarves in terms of advancements in technology. Naturally, they have an affinity for a type of magic called Somnomancy, a form of magic that affects the ability of sleep and dreams. This also translates to a strong talent towards Illusion and Mind magic. They lack talent for any sort of combative magic, preferring to win fights with clever uses of their defensive spells. Notably, they make excellent bards which while it has it's doubters is a form of magic in it's own right. The Gnomes love adventure, and you can rarely keep them out of trouble for it. But you could never ask for a more loyal friend. If a gnome gets you in trouble, they'll be right there to get you back out of it. Though maybe not directly... Speaking of... Do you smell smoke?...
Tieflings
Tieflings are a mysterious race in the realm... Nobody knows how they came about or why they have such unique appearances. But one thing is certain, they have a mighty use of destructive and conjuration magic. While many recognize their skill, they are often put off by their admittedly demonic appearance. People are naturally afraid of Tieflings, and they are regularly treated poorly not having any one country that accepts them fully. This fear and nomadic lifestyle that occurs as a result has lead many tieflings to be taken as slaves in the more cruel parts of the world. Dark Elves especially look down on them as low beings due to their use of tiefling slaves in their native culture, having been raised from birth to treat them in this regard. That being said, Tieflings boast a magnificent talent in the magical arts. Learning the most advanced techniques with ease and often becoming pioneers in their fields. Their lives of degridation has made many of them less confident than they should be to speak up however, and because of this many of their achievements go unnoticed. Many Tieflings have developed rebellious natures though, and may even act out as bullies at times when they've been pushed too far. They often have a sadistic hidden nature that they themselves may not even be aware of, but with enough pushing they might just snap... Tieflings usually have red, pale blue, or even pink skin with fiery red or pale white eyes. All tieflings have a prominent set of horns growing from their heads, and long devilish tails growing from their lower back. Side note: I love Tieflings they're so interesting! They're descendants of demonic entities, their blood corrupted into this demonic looking form even though they themselves aren't necessarily evil in nature though they can be very prone to evil tendencies because of it. The demonic image always leads to their discrimination in any lore, so the trade off will always be immense power for a harsh life. This harsh life often leads to them trying to hide their appearance under heavy cloaks, and takes aback most that weren't aware of their appearance.
That covers most of my bases, I left out most races that geographically wouldn't make sense but if you have any you want specifically then please do bring it to my attention and I'll add it to my list.
