Getting shot is a risk of the trade. Don't wanna get shot - don't go looting. I mean, even in the case of looking for food in other people's houses, you're entering someone elses house, looking for items they paid for and might need. I don't see any reason to excuse them and, if you willingly enter a house in an area where people own guns, perhaps you should stop and think 'is this worth dying for' though.

And that's under the assumption they're found by the owners or some vigilante passer by.
