I was actually thinking of assigning "roles" like "new Avatar", "Older mentor", "love interest", "chi blocker" and "descendant of older character" (list not final) along with "bending teacher" for each of the elements. That way we'd have great freedom to design the character, but the GM can plan "episodes" around it.

The basic idea I had:
