History: Born into the Alerion Dalish Clan, Serana was sent away from her Clan when it was discovered that she was a mage. The Clan already had it's maximum number of Mages, and so it was decided to send her away to live among some other Clan. Serana would never reach her adoptive Clan, however. Whilst travelling between Clans, the caravan that Serana was a part of was attacked and scattered by a gang of bandits. Serana, barely more than twelve years old at the time, was forced to run for her life, eventually finding her was to a secluded farmstead, owned by a family of humans.

Exhausted and starving, Serana was in poor control of her magic when she arrived on the farm. She quickly ended up giving herself away to the humans, who immediately had her locked up in their cellar while they sent for the Templars. After a cold hungry night in a dank wet cellar, Serana was almost happy to handed over to the Templars, who were polite and gentle, and more importantly, willing to feed her.

Serana was taken to the Ghislain Circle of Magi, where she grew up in relative comfort, learning to control her abilities in a safe and constructive manner. While in the Circle, Serana became enamored with the Knight-Enchanters of Orlais, and after passing her Harrowing, petitioned the First Enchanter to be allowed to study with them. Serana trained hard, for several years, among her Knight-Enchanter peers, crafting her own Spirit Blade Hilt.

Serana was enjoying her life in the Circle, but then one day the Grey Wardens of Orlais came calling, seeking able mage recruits. After observing Serana training the in Circle courtyard, her name was among those asked for the Warden Recruiters. Despite Serana's objections against leaving her Circle, Serana found herself conscripted into the Grey Wardens.
