All is fair in love and war. Seeing the message scrawled across the wall of a somewhat dilapidated old fort felt like a sign, though he knew his gods were not quite so subtle- nor so generous. The information was not readily available to Kassander, but this was Fort Josephine, a sea fort commissioned some time in the late 1800s, located off the end of Long Island near where Connecticut met Rhode Island. It had been abandoned for some time, and was due to follow in the footsteps of similar naval installations that had been renovated into luxury resorts, yet the private owners hadn’t quite finished renovating. It was well into the night by the time he landed on the island, releasing his grasp on his brother and his animal companion. The moon was high in the sky and just as enrapturing as the sun had been. Never had he seen a night so total, and even the stars were breathtaking- if only he knew how much dimmer they were here, blotted out by the glowing cities of New England. The doors were all unlocked, the lights out except for small ‘power’ lights that indicated the place had electricity at least. Nearly all the furnishings were in place, and Kassan was a little bemused why such a comfortable and luxurious sea-mansion was empty. The owners couldn’t have gone very far right? All these bedrooms, the wide dark screens, the countless shining glass surfaces and soft cushions… this was grander even than the palace, and yet no one lived here? He stalked the halls in silence, exploring without comment as he took in every detail and searched for threats and clues alike. As he’d landed on the roof it took him awhile to reach the bottom floor, though there were only three. It was there he discovered the reason the place was abandoned; scaffolds filled a large entrance way, and a cold chill permeated the room due to a few missing windows and holes in the wall. What could only be tools and construction supplies littered the area as well. It was unfinished, still being built. He could work with that. There were papers weighted down here and there, the words on them illegible. He abruptly became aware of a minor obstacle to his mission: language. He would have to trade favors to overcome this particular hurdle in a timely fashion. Maybe Hermes? Always questionable that one’s loyalties, but he was a traveler- or maybe he should seek aid elsewhere, from another pantheon altogether; the Olympians were too close to one another, it’d be unwise to spill something in the wrong ears. He sighed and went in search of Zali and Vel, having lost the two of them while investigating the nooks and crannies of this place.
