It's funny because technically both of those suggestions are true, and that's all I'm going to reveal in order to avoid spoiling everything. Let's just say I was very glad you included a significant friend in your backstory that went missing, because that was what made this plot point even possible in the first place. I'd always planned for there to be a Masked Man regardless of what everyone's backstory was, but yours allowed me to really boost the significance of the Masked Man without it being forced.
