History After declaring their independence from the Spanish Empire and (later) the Mexican Empire, the United Provinces of Central America experienced problems in their government. For years, the Assembly had been dissolved three different times and four Presidents were exiled. Despite the chaos, many Central Americans wanted to remain united; however, it wasn't enough to keep people at bay. The civil war began during the Mexican-American War in 1846. [SUBJECTED TO CHANGES] The United States of America saw Central America as an opportunity to invade from the south, causing the Mexican army to move back... [SUBJECTED TO CHANGES] Once the civil war ended, the United Provinces began repairing the damages with help from the Americans. [SUBJECTED TO CHANGES] The country remained peaceful for sixty-six years until the United States got involved in South and Central America affairs. That was because of the Central American-Colombian territorial dispute of Panama, marking the earliest example of modern interventionism under the Monroe Doctrine. This would not be the last that American got involved in Central America. When the United States wanted to build a canal across Panama, they offered to buy the area from Central America. However, the dictatorship refused to give up the area required to build the canal. Angered with the refusal, the United States supported pro-American rebel group that had plans of overthrowing the current government. In the matter of days, the rebels managed to storm the government buildings in the capital and successfully threw the dictator over five stories. Once the United States confirmed that the dictator had died, they sent over troops to Central America and installed a puppet. Everyone was surprised by the sudden move and knew that they had to accept their new ruler. [SUBJECTED TO CHANGES] When the canal was finished, Central America saw many Americans moving to cities nearby the canal (such as Panama City, Colón, and Gamboa) and brought economical growth to the region. [SUBJECTED TO CHANGES] The puppet government also improved the health and infrastructure of the country while slowly spreading Americanism to the people; however, many of them kept holding on to their old cultures. While Europe was still fighting with each other, like the United States, the United Provinces benefited from the fighting. Then, the United States fell into an economic depression that almost bankrupted the government. Central America also entered an economic depression, but it didn't collapse the country. Unlike the United States, which fell into another civil war. Originally, the United Provinces had plans of supporting the Union during the time of crisis. However, members of the government knew that it was perfect timing to declare their independence like they did to the Mexicans. With the help from the military, they managed to overthrow the government and laid siege to the Panama Canal. After months of fighting, the army took the Canal and sent an ultimatum to the United States. Allow the United Provinces of Central America to be independent. In return, they will have their canal back. With the civil war still going on, the American government had no choice but to accept the ultimatum. [SUBJECTED TO CHANGES] After they have achieved their independence, the new government decided that it was time to focus on expanding southwards. Gran Colombia had been dealing with the economic depression and a deadly fire in the city of Bogotá. The weak army wasn't ready for the decent Central American military as they invaded in July, 16th 1940. And within a month and a half, the country surrounded and signed a treaty that forced them to be landlocked. Gran Colombia also lost almost all of their oil fields, making their economic depression much worse. Central America became the second oil producer next to the United States during the late forties, making them rich. And they decided to expand into the Caribbeans in the fifties by invading Jamaica, Cayman Island, and Trinidad & Tobago. The election of 1960 looked like that the conservative Rhett Herring was going to win. If he were to win, he would be the first American elected president in thirty years. However, the other candidates are using his American identity against him. Other TBA
