Your primary concern shouldn't be a major player. As this RP has worked historically, major players tend to be those who write the most relevant or the strongest characters in term of character itself. If you can write westernization in a way that's fascinating to read and watch happen, then you accomplish the goals of being a "major player".

PoW in its last iteration had Evan's Armenia of all country being considered important because he wrote interesting stuff and had an interesting setting, or allowed it to become interesting with Armenia being developed from two prongs, from himself and Vilage's late-stage Sahle story-line.

And shit, Ethiopia for the same reason. It was probably best described as mostly being a backwater still but it had presence.
