This Is Not The End
Tom’s words seemed to block out the thunder. Slowly, the fire didn’t seem so bright, the miasma of explosions and shrapnel that littered the sky didn’t seem so daunting, and the wound that opened her stomach that Tom held within his blood soaked hands didn’t seem so sharp. All that remained was herself, Tom, and his words. “Just remember what I said before we dropped.” He repeated. She didn’t quite like his tone very much now, in her haze; his voice was filled with hesitance, fear and urgency. His eyes kept alternating from gazing into hers, and staring around in a panic. As she dazed in an out of existence, her mind occasionally seeping over to a darker place as the blood trickled from her body, she could hardly make sense of what was going on around her. They’d been falling, that she knew. They’d landed, unlike so many others. They’d regrouped, proceeded towards their objective as they had been taught day after day for their entire lives. It was their first time Ground-Side, and few rarely made multiple return trips, so they were well aware of the danger that lurked beneath the safety of the black canvas of the stars, but she couldn’t quite remember how she’d gotten to where she now lay, dying with Tom besides her. She was going to die. It was a strange, unfamiliar clarity. Tom knew it, as well, as much as he tried to save her. She’d been… hit? Shot? Plunged? It didn’t seem to matter, really; the creatures had gotten the better of her, and even despite the Kinesis-Suit that covered her body, each one crafted for them individually for this very mission, she’d been fatally injured. She was prepared for this, though; they all were, unfortunately. “You remember what I said, right, Jean?” Tom slapped his hand across her face a few times gently, trying to keep her awake as best he could. Jean’s eyes fell to the bodies that surrounded her, of her friends and those whom had been her family. This was their first mission, one they had trained for their entire lives; how had they failed so miserably? She nodded, about all she could muster. “Tell me,” He insisted, “Tell me what I said, Jean. Come on!” She knew that every second he stayed here with her, his chances of survival, although already bleak, grew darker and darker. She would have urged him to leave herself if she had the strength to muster the words. “God-damn it, tell me Jean! What did I say?!” He screamed, about the first time he had ever raised his voice at her. “Thi- This is not… the end…” She croaked, blood coming from her lungs with each word. “You’re damn right, Jean! You’re not dying here!” One of the creatures must have come into view, because Tom stood for a moment. He unsheathed the standard-issue Blade that came with each of the suits, kicked out his foot and brought the blade down. She didn’t see the creature, but heard the thud of its body fall. Tom returned to her instantly. “Tom, we need to move! The Shuttle isn’t going to wait forever!” Came a distant voice. It was Tilly. Jean was glad she was still alive, such a sweet girl for such a cruel place. But Tom wouldn’t move. “I’m not leave her, damn it! Go!” Jean found the strength to lift her hand, barely above to lift the thin metallic material of her suit; it felt so heavy, now. She rested her hand upon his, just above the wound of her stomach. She forced a smile, as difficult as that way, and felt a glint in her eyes. Nothing else existed now, other than her and Tom. “Don’t be… you have… run…” Her words were broken and thin.
Thank you for reading the above post. I realize that, without context, it doesn't make much sense at all. Well, let me shed some light on that. The year is 2089, and our role-play takes place thirty years after a mysterious mutation claimed almost all sentient life on Earth. They were transformed into mutated, somewhat intelligent twisted beings that preyed on, mutilated, killed and ate all living things they could find, making life on the surface almost impossible. The few remaining members of mankind took sanctuary aboard three civilian ships in low orbit around the planet: Rebirth, Awakening and Slumber. Their, for the past thirty years, the few thousand remaining members of mankind have tried to live as normal lives as they can. And that's where our characters come in. Our characters will be apart of the few remaining whom volunteer to return to the surface to try and reclaim it as best they can. Unofficially named 'Ground-Siders' by the civilians, they're pretty much the only military force left, consisting of volunteers from all walks of life. Brutally trained, fitted with the finest technology (See: Kinesis-Suit and Nano-Blade), they're the finest mankind has left to offer. Rarely does any particular 'Ground-Sider' survive more than a few trips to the surface. Those who do, become legends. Those who don't, become memories. 'Ground-Siders' are fitted with the last piece of technology mankind created for its downfall: the infamous Kinesis-Suit, complemented by the equally notorious Nano-Blade. Firstly, the Kinesis-Suit is a thin, lightweight suit consisting of nano-technology, protecting the wearer from a great deal of kinetic force and ballistic projectiles, whilst also enhancing them physically. Capable of firing short bursts of electro-magnetic energy from their palms (Warning: May Exceed Power Capacity. Use with caution.), the suits were designed for long-term use against overwhelming odds. Secondly, we have the Nano-Blade. The primary weapon of all Ground-Siders, the Nano-Blade is made from a thin Nano-Alloy that makes them damn-near indestructible. Its design fits its user, and rigorous training is required to skillfully wield one. Our characters will be apart of a new batch of dwindling recruits. None of us have ever been to the surface, having been born and raised aboard the three Vessels, which will act as a sort of Hub for the role-play. Ground-Siders have permission to visit the surface at their own discretion, so long as it is to benefit mankind. There is a still a great deal to add, as I'm somewhat rushed for time writing this, but this is just a general outline. So, any questions? Interested?
