Also, I'll say that the newer generations of people are a bit more progressive and less inherently tied to their faith than folks in the past, so you'll even see some younger Varyans being against the Omestrian slavetrade and all that. This also spills over to the Church itself, so maybe some of your instructors were a bit lax when it came to that stuff and spent most of their energy training you to be effective warriors instead of effective priests. :p
