The thing with One Piece is that they need to have a goal or motive that can only be fulfilled by going out to sea, but his motive is so vague that I have no idea how it relates to it. Furthermore he has no position on the crew and his personality, cements the that he basically doesn't really fit into the crew. His personality of the strong silent type  doesn't work for a group that's meant to be a like a family, and being aloof doesn't work for that and his lack of a position makes him feel like not a part of the ship at all.

Also is it just me or am I getting some serious Lee Sin vibes from this character?

In response to this points:
1.  Maybe this is more subjective than objective?  Remember the giraffe guy admitted to liking the taste.  
2.  I agree with this.  I don't mean that its increasing his abilities to those levels, because I thought it was more like Deku's full cowling and was just a boost in physical abilities, but its definitely kind of vague.  So more information is needed.
3.  These I'm not TOO worried about, yes they can be an issue but its a possibility more than a certainty, because he strikes me as similar to Jimbe, whom still technically doesn't have a position in the crew but as proven himself capable behind the wheel.  As for the aloofness, most characters like that only begin as aloof but then they grow over time.  As for how his atonement works, I do agree we need more details on how it could be accomplished with going over seas and joining a pirate crew.  
4.  Really, the main issues I have, aside from #2 is I'm not quiet sure why it is his devil fruit had such impacts on his personality, because other than Chopper's monster point we haven't seen a fruit impact someone like that.  Also, while on the subject of devil fruits, since its a mythical zoan what are its full transformations and partial transformations?  I get the god is an awakened form but for it to be a mythical it should till be able to allow for the two regular states.
