The people have an ancient history, and the city is very sophisticated in terms of architecture. The main building materials are sandstone, adobe, and wood. There is a system for waste water and sewage that carries it out of the city, and there are wells and cisterns for fresh water, as well as the river that runs through Sonriette. The people there are masters of tile work and sculpture. Metal work is recent and not yet highly refined. Though the city has grown large, the Sonriette still see themselves as a tribe, and they look to the tribe chief and High Priestess as their leaders. The chief and priestess are always married, and when they feel the time is right, they pass on leadership to the next pair. Children deemed outstanding are selected and trained for these roles from a young age. Throughout adolescence, they compete in a number of trials. The girls who are not selected to become High Priestess usually choose to remain as priestesses in the Temple of Aero. The boys who train but are not selected to be chief usually go on to serve as advisers.
