There is 1 alternative to gaining powers rather than a traumatic experience leading to a trigger event, and they are called Cauldron. Super secretive Illuminati type organization, but if you have the connections to find them, or they find you interesting, they can sell you powers. It's extremely expensive and usually costs extra favors on top of cash, but there's no denying their effectiveness.
