Ha ha my goodness this 'hit piece' NBC news put on their youtube account is hilariously bad[decent editing though]. How Gamers Are Facilitating The Rise Of The Alt-Right. That's right guys, discord and all those gamers are the true problem...:P Just thought it appropriate since the topic is in game territory right now.
NBC did a horrible job of presenting a real issue. Theyve made too many broad strokes, and attacking discord is a stupid, its just another platform and it can be used however the people in question want to. However there is a point here amongst all of misrepresentation and poor research, one that is something kind of unspoken and that is that gamergate has been a gateway drug to more nefarious groups sometimes. Just stick with me on this train of thought: Gamergate was HUGE and it was the first really major political movement for a lot of young male gamers since the jack thompson days. And just like with Jack Thompson, they rose up against attacks on their medium and the politics which seemed to be doing no good for the games or the consumers. A large majority of Gamergaters were just regular people who didn't like the actions of Kotaku and Anita in the wake of a few different scandals. Politically they were across the board, it wasn't a right wing or a left wing movement it was an apolitical advocacy movement. But what cant be ignored is that along the way a section of the gamergate movement got tied up with the anti-feminist movement, which of course overlaps with the Men's Rights Movement. Still a small percentage mind you, not even most gamergaters support Roosh V and his dangerous rhetoric but there was some overlap. This is also where Milo became famous outside of England, and some of the original GG crowd overlapped with him. Now what I'm saying here is fraction of GG got with the MRA movement and then a good chunk of that MRA movement got with the anti-SJW movement and then that anti-SJW anti-Feminist movement, got with a general anti-leftism movement. So this is small fraction but the breadcrumb trail is fairly clear. Now at some point the alt-right got involved with MRA and Youtube skeptic community, and were able to bolster their numbers with angry newly politicized young men who not only hated feminism but now a large swath of what the left represents in general. So fast forward to today, there is a fraction of ex-gamergaters who got lead down a trail of internet movmments that eventually lead them to the alt-right. HOWEVER Stormfront has been around for AGES and there was no shortage of young people on there when I would occasionally lurk back in 05-06. So I think what most people are missing is that the LARGE majority of Alt-Right tiki torch crowd were already white nationalists and were just wait for a new energised movement as a springboard before showing their faces. This is what everyone including NBCis missing about the Alt-Right, investigate Stormfront, not Gamergate.
