Old and ancient, the Ironbacks have lived for generations upon generations and seem almost immortal to the fleeting Rats. They are known for their stubborn attitudes and otherwise solitary life style. Some prey upon ships while others simply masquerade as islands, oblivious to ships that come near or even rest upon its impenetrable shell. Calm and collected, friendlier Ironbacks often look at rats as small, giddy children who quarrel among themselves seeing themselves as mentors. A few primitive tribes have taken to worship these immortal mentors as gods even!  

Although rare, they are willing to help rats as great floating platforms on land or at sea, providing unmatched protection and safety. However the process of doing so is often extremely difficult and expensive as many Ironbacks wish for a safe place to store their eggs, a rare and highly sought after delicacy for all animals! It is only through repeated generations of encounters and trust do Ironbacks allow rats to clamber atop their shells and ride them.
