To both you and [@Drakey], my thought was actually more that /Rodion/ might end up interested in /her/.  She's his age, she's really into mechanical stuff, in a way that Ziotea just isn't.  She's super smart, and even if Rodion likes her just as a colleague, Ziotea could totally be jealous.  She is a bit of him hanging with Astraea, after all.  I never assumed Devo would have interest in Rodion, nor even vice versa (though that seemed a stronger possibility).

I'm very much into organically developed relationships, though I don't mind defining them as having already developed in the past to account for a certain present, as with Rodion and Ziotea.

And yes, I could definitely see Rodion being confused.  He likes spending time with her...I've no clue what he likes in terms of appearance (other than, apparently, Ziotea?  But that might be she's lovely because he likes her, since that's a thing that happens), but that might be a factor.  He's a teenager, a virgin, and doesn't really understand love...I can't think of a better recipe for drama.  <3
