The cage containing the bird was clutched tightly in both hands as if it were a lifeline, an anchor, as her gaze darted around the room but often strayed to the window. There was little to be seen between the rain, the whirling sand, and the sky that hadn't entirely lightened yet. But she knew it had to be bad. There were classmates out there--her classmates--trying to hold the attackers off? For how long? And they were stuck here. This time, she didn't long to see around her and find the placement of everything. She didn't want to pinpoint the locations of the people. The objects. Last time during the attack on D.C, when it had come to uncovering the people buried there, she had thought she could not see enough and longed for more. She had gotten it, but now she didn't want to see. Sophia's gaze left the window and she looked down into the small birdcage at the reddish black bird there, observing it's movements as the seconds ticked by and the voices around her blurred. There was the bird, there was her. And there was fear. That was all. But at least she could focus on the bird. Did it know what danger it was in? Heidi... When Ernie came to get her down into the tunnels once more, she held the cage by one hand and grabbed the guitar with the other, taking a moment to sling it over her back for ease of carry. Stopping short at the trapdoor, she glanced at Ernie nervously then back at the cage. It would be difficult to climb down holding the cage, so... It was hard, but she managed to speak (quietly) to Ernie. "Could you... hold this while--while I... climb?" As she spoke, she extended the cage out by a few inches towards Ernie. "Just fucking get a new one!" As Ernie glared, Sophia withdrew the cage quickly and looked away. She wouldn't leave Pav behind. Heidi was already... behind... and the bird had been entrusted to her. She couldn't leave the innocent thing. Silently, she wrapped one arm around the birdcage and tried to make sure it rested snugly against her hip, fingers gripping the bars to help prevent her from dropping it. Then she began to climb down, trying to ignore Ernie's unapproving presence and the bad feeling it gave her. Clinging close to the ladder as she made her way down one armed, the bird cage clanked and scraped against the ladder. Sorry, Pav. I'm sorry. I'm trying my best. Once down, she remained by the wall, gaze on the bird once more.
I was initially planning to post this after the healing/tunnel collab, but I'm posting it early since the chances of me getting on Sunday to post are low. The Ernie bit is the only part that really relates to the collab, so I guess the post still makes sense.
