Well as for your character's place on the ship there's always the cabin boy/ maintenance guy, which I"ve always thought of as the position for either a stoic, trained warrior or a goof.  Our crew also needs a musician too, which I can see a fun loving guy such as your character doing.  Mmmmm.  There's all the main ones I can think up at the moment but I'm sure there's more.  

You don't have to kill the crew off if you don't want to.  Maybe they could've just been captured and sent to Impel down or some other marine prison(he won't know which) and its your character's goal to free them?  Another idea is to have his crew get into some kind of situation, where they thought your character was killed (similar to the Martian with Mat Daemon) and your character is on a quest to reunite with them?
