Richard is a suave and handsome man. The man leads others on for fun and while he can utterly devastate people and leave them in tears. He has been referred to as a utter jerk multiple times. Though to those he deems close to he is anything but. He loves his two sister and holds them close to his heart, literally. For them he would do anything and is filled with guilt that he wasn't able to stop his mother before she caused his only surviving sister to be cast out onto the streets or worse, into the Alaskan wilderness. Though also because of this he despises humans. Judging them very harshly for their misdeeds. Though he does not absolve mutants of their own misdeeds, he simply is not as harsh with them. Or perhaps at times, he is more harsh because they should know better. The man is a predator to the bone, stalking and hunting even passively.
Though a lot can be said about Richard Lain his biggest defining feature is his 'Code of Honor'. He refuses to harm children, often going out of his way to help them. Mutant or human alike. He also will not raise his hand to strike a woman, though he will incapacitate them in other ways. Seducing, knocking them out, or- and most often, locking them in rooms while he deals with the real business. However should a woman truly cross the line, he will strike without hesitation. Much as he does with men. Only with the latter he is far, far more ruthless with. Perhaps blaming them for his father's leaving and not protecting his youngest sister from their mother dearest.

He was always quick to heal, but when he was out barhopping. He became cornered by a small turf war between gangs. Police became involved and shots were being fired. Richard's buddies had made it out of the problematic area, but he was a tad bit stuck and struck by bullets. Writhing on the ground became actual withering as he accidentally shifted to a snake. A adder. He had been studying them as to mess with a friend of his in a practical joke, however this was no joke. Richard shifted back, hiding the fact he could shift. But he did practice this new power. Years later a accident ravaged his right arm, which regenerated over two years. Had it not, he would be missing large chunks of flesh from it.

Richard was horrified by his mother casting out a child from her house because they were a mutant. But he also was too aware that people saw them as something to be destroyed or tested on. Furious and helpless with what to do, Richard couldn't be the brother he had left to become. So he took on a 'devil-may-care' attitude and became The Adder. Joining up with the Brotherhood in hopes of vengeance for his lost sister.

He was the eldest of the Laine children. However, his birth was heralded by a shotgun wedding. Though neither Anita or Robert Laine were unhappy in their marriage. His father worked as a well-to-do professor and author. Not a overly well known man, but solid in his work on Alaskan climate and biology. His mother was a secretary, around his and his sisters' birth. He was about six when his first sister was born, and thirteen when his youngest sister was born. It was shortly after this his father retired to live a life with his family, and his dream of the Alaskan wilderness. His mother was born and raised in the wilderness of their home state, so it was she who really pulled the lot of them through it. However his eldest sister died to a fever during their first winter in their cabin. Much to his parents' dismay. His mother blamed his father for it and vice versa. Though his father also doubted his youngest daughter was his. This started a quarrel that lasted for five years, worsening over time. The only escape that Richard had was taking care of his little sister and school. Both which he excelled at. Richard had always loved his sisters and took the utmost pride in being a good big brother to them. Something that both girls enjoyed. Even for the limited time he had them and they him.

When he turned eighteen he was far too battle worn with the fighting in the house to stay. So he took his stuff and left. Thinking to join the army, which he did. However, after a solid five years settling into his new life. Reading up on anything he could get his hands on and mastering his awakening powers. A accident took his right arm, nearly killing him. However he was still alive if out of a arm and job, and to his horror and astonishment his arm regrew over the next two years. Richard quickly abandoned the military when this started, setting himself up with several shady friends as something like a gun for hire. One with a venomous bite. Essentially becoming a freelance assassin or hitman. Now twenty six, he returned to his mother's house. Hoping to collect his remaining sibling.

That didn't go to plan however. He learned from mother dearest his sister had gone missing. After threatening the woman for the truth. Richard learned that his father had left shortly after him, not filing for divorce. His sister was a [i]'freak'[/i], a mutant, who his mother had cast out due to this fact. Something he relished in informing her that lil' sis was not the only [i]freak[/i] in the family. He left his mother disturbed and fearful that her son would return for revenge. All the more hateful against mutants. Irate and furious, Richard hunted the streets and cities of Canada and Alaska. But he couldn't bear the cold, retreating the the south. He was far too aware that his sister was most likely dead, or lost forever. Something he still strives to uncover the truth of. After the next four years, he joined up with the Brotherhood. Furious about the treatment of mutants and hoping for some sign that his sister still lived. That he could keep her safe in a deadly world.
