Zeke was following a sunbeam. It was reflecting off something near the art classroom, and he wandered off in the complete opposite of the direction the rest of the class was. He'd made a couple of friends so far, and he'd enthusiastically sent his parents pictures of all of them; Yellow, Icy, Icy's Seat, Bookie, Braids... But most of all, he had told them the most about Viola. She made him feel happy, though the way his mom had smiled and his dad had laughed when he told them about her made him worried. Did they know something he didn't? He liked hanging around her, and Braids. That was that. He ducked around an older student, his eyes fixed on the light, then he raised his camera to photograph the way a beam in the ceiling split the light with a shadow. It actually bent the light a little; he could see the slightly lighter triangle behind the wood that shouldn't actually be lit if light was straight lines. After taking the photo, he turned around and took a photo of the beam from a different angle. It wasn't as interesting, but the class teacher had gone on and on and on and on about composition and context, which meant he wanted Zeke to make his pictures more interesting. Or at least that's what Zeke thought he said. Apparently "normal" people didn't find pictures of speckled rocks and shiny windows interesting. The teacher had praised Zeke's skill with porter-achure, but he'd said that while looking at Viola's picture so Zeke had snatched the camera back. Zeke pouted. Did he have to try and take a picture of the beam and the light from the top? But he couldn't climb that high. And Viola couldn't do the flying thing, and she wasn't here. So he couldn't, and so Zeke decided to do something else. He started retracing his steps, finding the photography classroom and walking past it in the direction of the gardens. He'd have to ask if his pocket money was enough for a long lens yet. Then he could take photos of the town from the school, and catch the liquid orange sunset from his dorm window, and maybe even start getting the bright stars. He'd seen one that kept changing colours. Red, blue, red, blue. Zeke had tried making a dot that did that, but it just looked purple.
